Why would a network computer not show?
If all of our computers are on a network at work, why would one of the computers not show up? I know it is using the correct network SSID.

Has it ever been viewable before? Is it joined to the same workgroup/domain? What OS is installed on the computer in question?

first step is to share something on the computer in question
If you want to see it in My Network check your tcp/ip properties and the wins tab for netbios set to default and not disabled.

My imagination is not working too well today; what does "not show up" mean? In Vista's eye candy network map? In a router's list of Dhcp clients? Not pingable by Computer Name? Etc.?

Viewable before... Yes
Same workgroup... Yes
Operating system is XP
WANDERER2
There is a folder created to share stuff

On my Vista machine I hit the Start Button, then I select "Network"... This is where it does not show up. All computers in our Network show up, except the one in question. Does this make sense?

Daniel, i think you must check your firewall settings on windows XP.

Or you must 'enable Netbios over TCP/IP':

Local Area Connection (if you use wireless do the with Wireless adapter) -> TCP/IP ->Advanced ->DNS

Can you explain this a bit more please:
Or you must 'enable Netbios over TCP/IP'
I am on an XP machine and it is wired. How would I go about enabling what you suggested?
Thank you,
Michael

Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP for 2K/XP
  1. Right click Network Places (Network Neighborhood for W98).
  2. Select Properties
  3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
  4. Select Properties
  5. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
    • Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties
    • Click Advanced
    • Select the WINS Tab Above
    • Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
  6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.

Vista is pretty much the same process, though it should already be enabled.

For each machine, please post this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Yes, thank you. First guess is the same as luisc's--a firewall (security suite) on the 'shy' XP machine. Can you ping that machine by Computer Name? Does it appear in Network or My Network Places of other PCs?

It is just windows firewall? Where would a setting be that would be preventing something from showing?
It does not appear in anyone elses computer's My Network Places, etc.
