Solved: XP and Vista Networking Problem
I have a desktop running XP with SP 2 and the Link Layer Service installed on it (physically) connected to a D-Link DIR 655 ( a router), which is wirelessly connected to my Dell M1330 running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. I can ping the other computer from both, and I have tried disabling the firewalls. The XP desktop can access the Vista over the network, but on Vista the XP does not show in the network. It can be seen on the "full map" however. The thing I am suspicious of though is in the properties for "Wireless Network Connection" and inside "Client for Microsoft Networks". The Name Service Provider is not selected. When I try switching it to Windows Locator, it immediately reverts back after I close the window. I would really appreaciate any information on this.

Let's see this for each of the computers in question, the XP and the Vista.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The problem is the Peer-Peer node type on the Vista computer. Here's the Microsoft solution to fix that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938248/en-us

OK I tried what was on the Microsoft page. First I tried requesting the hotfix, which, when I ran it gave me a "does not apply to your computer error". Then I tried the workaround (setting the value to 2, which I believe is what it was suggesting), which also didn't do anything. I have not changed the registry back, so if you could tell me whether to keep the new changes that would be great. I really appreciate your help on the matter
