NetBT errors in event log
I started getting this error (event id :4321) after upgrading XP to sp3.

The name "FRIEDMAN :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 192.168.0.4. The machine with the IP address 192.168.0.6 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.

FRIEDMAN is the workgroup, not the machine name.

192.168.0.4 is my machine, running xp pro. 192.168.0.6 is my wife's machine running xp home. Both 'puters were upgraded to sp3 and the log errors started. I see no problems other than the log.

The subnet for both machines is 255.255.255.0

I am not running WINS. This is a small home network with a router.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Eric

Sounds like there's something about the network we're not seeing here.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thanks John.

My PC was assmbled by a local shop - ASUS P4P-800 deluxe MB, Intel P4 2.8 gig cpu, with on-board networking.

The other PC is a Dell Dimension B110 with a P4 2.8gig cpu, also with on-board networking.

The router is a wired Netgear FR114P.

I am located in the US, the ISP is AT&T (former Bellsouth).

This is an IFITL connection, there is no router. I'm not sure what is advertised. I get about 1000 kbps downloads and 256 kbps uploads.

My pc uses XP pro sp3 - 5.1.2600
The other pc is XP home sp3 - 5.1.2600

No wireless.

The usual browser on both machines is Firefox, ver 3 for me, ver 2 on the other pc.

There are no problems experienced, just the event log errors:
event id 4321, description The name "FRIEDMAN :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 192.168.0.4. The machine with the IP address 192.168.0.6 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.

I've not seen any event log problems in the other pc, only mine. My ip is 192.168.0.4. FRIEDMAN is the workgroup.

Here's the paste from the command prompt:

FWIW I disabled the browser service on Mack, the machine with the error. It may have cleaned up the event log errors.

Thanks again,

Eric

The IPCONFIG results look normal, what's the current status?

As soon as I start the computer browser service, I see the error in the event log.

This configuration has been fine until I upgraded to sp3 so I'd be surprised if it was misconfigured. The problem seems benign since the only "error" is in the event log. And it seems like I really don't need the browser service on my small home network. I guess it's not really a problem.

Thanks again for the help.

Try uninstalling SP3 and see if the error goes away.

FWIW, I had a total blue-screen the first time I installed SP3, I had to upgrade the video drivers to get it to install. I'm not sure I should have bothered, but I did.
