| Messenger and updates problem Hi there im new to the site i wonder if anyone can help me. I can currently access the internet but it wont allow me to download automatic updates, also msn and other messengers refuse to work. I trouble shooted them and they say that my default gateway is offline. I consulted a few friends and they suggested that i run a virus and spyware scan which came up clear. My firewall has been set up to recieve these updates and to run microsoft but still no joy. I even tried running it without the firewall and that didnt work either. Someone else suggested i run the winsock program and that didnt work. Ive also run lsp and that came back fine and ive also reset the winsock settings. Im currently using a usb modem adsl. Ive run a ipconfig to bring up the details so if you can help you can see whats what with it. Ive also tried to ping the ips and none of them bring anything back i just get a message of transmit error code 5 message. http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/9089/ipjz9.jpg Thankyou for your time and help |

| Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please. What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Answers to your questions Im in the UK AOL is my isp Currently running the AOLVR 9 software The speed is roughly 6-8mb The modem is a BT Voyager 105 USB ASDL Im guessing its made by BT The s/n number is 0526033521R I dont have a router just the modem The connection type is wired usb external modem The pc is a Hewlett packard pavilion .461 uk XP service pack 2 is the version and patch level Internet explorer 7 + whatever browser that the aol software itself uses There is only this computer no others. Basically when i run my virus softwares auto update or my firewalls auto update they basically say they cant connect but dont give any specific error message. | That's a strange looking IPCONFIG output. THe USB modem appears to not be resolving an IP address, however you have the PPP interface working. The ping error is normally either a firewall blocking the ping or stack corruption. Try disabling ALL the firewalls as a test and see if that helps. Here's a stack reset if you can't get any results with the firewalls. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine.

| Let's see some local PING results. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

| You still have McAfee firewall running. I'd uninstall McAfee totally for a test and see if this resolves the issue. After uninstalling McAfee, run the stack repair again. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. | re Hi there, Sorry for the delay. I Uninstalled the firewall and i made sure the windows one was off. I then rebooted and then re did the stack reset and catalog commands rebooted again. I fired up the internet connection and ran the tests. The ping still isnt working. Ive included the report here and i also ran the hijack thing again and have posted the log of that too.
