Solved: Can not connect to wireless
Okay here is my story-- I was given a free computer Compaq desktop. I have installed a wireless adapter ( Netgear WG311). I can get a signal and it shows that I am connected but I can not get to the internet at all. It shows that I have an IP address 192.168.0.65 and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 the default gateway says that it is not available. I have a router from Qwest. I have other machines on this network that work just fine just not this new one....

Here are some of the things that I have tried

I have swapping out the card. Card works in another computer with out issue.

wired connection I can get on the net with out any issues

I can get on the net with the wireless IF I disable the web encryption key. I have changed the key none of this has worked

I have contacted my ISP and they have not a clue. The computer is shown on the network but for some reason it is being blocked to the net.

Like I said it was given to me..... It is has no anti virus software on it

What every help anyone could give me would be great Thanks in advance !

Does the free PC have a new install of Windows?

I think you said that you get a good IP configuration when using WEP encryption but cannot access the internet nor the router. But if you take off WEP encryption you can access the internet. Unless I misunderstood that or you left something out I can't think of what could be causing this.

How about connecting by both wireless and ethernet and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have found that the adapter's utility often works better or I like it better than XP's Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC). The really important thing is to never have more than one of them running. When you use Netgear the D-Link and WZC are not running, right?

That ipconfig was with encrption?

In a command window try these pings and tell us if you get Replies or Packets lost. The first one is your computer, so change the ping if your IP has changed.

ping 192.168.0.67
ping 192.168.0.1
ping 68.180.206.184
ping yahoo.com

That ipconfig showed no ethernet adapter at all.

sorry for the delay went out for ice cream

Okay here are some answers
Not sure what you mean about net gear and D-link and WZC But if I go to wireless connections and then to go to wireless tab there is a spot there to click to have windows manage the connections this is not clicked as I have netgear managing them

the IPCONFIG that I sent was with encryption I have not turmed it off since my original test yesterday

the pinging results are in
pinged the computer fine

Timed out on all of the other three

ipconfig not showing ethernet adapter -- could it be not showing since I had the local connection disabled?? here is a new ipconfig with it enable does it look any better

By "new install of Windows" I mean Windows that hasn't been used and corrupted by somebody else (I don't know whether your free computer is new or used).

The ethernet connection is still showing Media Disconnected. I don't know how you can get internet access or any other access that way.

Earlier I took "web" to just be a mis-typing of WEP. Now you've repeated it as "WEB." If that's something special, not normal ol' WEP encryption, I have never heard of it and have no idea what it may be doing or possible problems with it.

If it is WEP encryption, are you using a HEX key or ascii passcode?

Sorry for the confustion it is WEP and it is a 10 digit key I think that is it HEX but I am not really sure

the computer is not new and I am sure that it has been corrupted since I started this thread with you I have found out that the DVD/CD drive will not burn a CD it will ready one but not burn to one....... When I got this it was striped of all doucments and other programs other than windows. It opened Windows fine... It came with no disks at all. The computer came from my nephew -- his boss gave it to him and he really did not need it so he passed it along.....

here is another IPCONFIG /ALL with all connections plugged in and running

Yes, it sounds like you are using a 64-bit WEP HEX key (10 digits; the hexadecimal digits are 0-9 and a-f). That is good because an ascii passcode is sometimes translated differently.

A fresh Windows install would be nice, 'cause then you wouldn't have to contend with past problems. But w/o buying a retail Windows you're stuck.

I can think of no reason for the symptoms that you are getting except for the small possibility of a driver problem. See if Netgear has an updated driver for your wireless adapter. You'll probably need to know the version number, which is right after the WG311 on the card.

If you already have the latest driver, use Device Manager to uninstall it, and then go throught the installation process again. This is for the small possibility of driver corruption.
