Vista XP network problem
I'm trying to get a laptop running Vista to connect to my XP network. The first problem is that I cant turn on network discovery on the laptop. It will not click to "on". However, the laptop does see my network, but gives me the message, "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." We have matched network name, encryption type and password. When it says "the settings saved on this computer", which computer does it mean? I've seen some things saying that Norton Protection Center (which was unfortunately already installed) can prevent me from turning on network discovery. I plan to uninstall it soon. Any help would be appreciated.

Let's see this from the Vista machine and one of the working XP machines.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

They both claim to be the Master Browser; probably because at least one has a firewall that is preventing the other from "seeing" it.

In the Vista's Network and Sharing Center you have the network designated 'Private,' right? If 'Public' it will be invisible to other computers on the network and, I think, you cannot turn Network Discovery on.

Here is Symantic's very good Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039 In another thread a Symantic rep advised to run it a second time after a reboot.

I find that somehow network detection has been turned on. It appears that the Vista laptop is set to a public network. However, I'm still trying to find the place where I can reset that. I've been through the Windows firewall, but don't see anything there. This may take a while.

A new developement. My HP Network Assistant tells me "Router not supported". It boggles my mind that Microsoft managed to build "out" so much backward compatibility with Vista. (Unless it's part of some kind of plot. Hmmm, yes.....)

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Inter faces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

In Network and Sharing Center to the right on the same line that says (Public network) click on Customise, and it will become clear.

Huh? Your ipconfig /all showed an apparent good connection to it via ethernet. Are you having trouble connecting via wireless? If so, I suggest that you make sure you have the latest router firmware and the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site before using the solutions John described.

Thanks for the homework. I've finally gotten the network private. Right now I'm trying to get on the local network by way of Ethernet cable. I will look for firmware, then procede to JohnWill's list. And, yes, I do have internet since I plugged in via the Ethernet cable. I'll be back.

I did find a driver upgrade from Intel, not from HP. Given the warnings about "we just make hardware, we don't make laptops, and who knows what the heck your laptop maker did with our hardware, so use at your own risk, etc......, I guess I have to decide whether to install it or not. As to the router firmware, the Belkin chart claims that my router (the F5D7230-4, ver. 6xxx) has native Vista support. I guess I will flip a coin.

Well, I installed the new driver successfully, but still get "The settings on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I guess it's time to try JohnWill's advice.

JohnWill, I have accomplished the first two steps, but when I go to the registry, I find no "GUID" under interfaces (just many-charactered entries), and no "GUID" entries under any of the three.

OK, now I see. It wants the number of the network adapter that is connected to the network. But how do I determine which that is? Much to figure out here.

Well, I figured it out, but nothing has changed. I also can't see any other network places through the Ethernet cable. (Couldn't before, either.) It's starting to look like this computer just wasn't meant to be networked.
