Unhappy How does this work? internet access
I have a desktop and gaining the internet by Tiscali broadband modem connecing using ADSL wan adapted. Don't know what this is but happy.
My young son has brought a wireless enabled laptop to stop the fighting over the computer. How does he gain the internet without using wires? I've been told to set up a wireless router modem on the desktop so he can pick up the signal. Tiscali send me a Siemens Gigaset SE587 WILAN dsl. I couldn't run the disc in my desktop so I ran it from my computer D drive. It does not continue when it gets to the part "checking resources" so I read the guide instructions. I'm running windows XP. I deactivate my Norton firewall for a short time and disconnect my current broadband modem from BT socket and replace it with wireless router. Please note my desktop is not near my main BT telephone port. I have a extension with a filter running to my desktop. This works fine for my current broadband modem. I set up the cables as in the guide. the following light up solid green: Power, LAN, WLAN, ADSL.
I get a red light for online and cannot access the internet or continue onto the next bit, typing in 192.168.1.1 in web address browser as instructed. I check my ethernet network card is enabled. I disconnect my dialup broadband and try to tick my LAN. It says acquiring network address and when I left click for status it says invalid IP address. It will not repair as it is renewing IP address. I have spent a long time going round in circles as I have to unplug it all again to replug in my current connection to search on the net for answers. I'm hoping you can give me the answer. Please be patient and very clear with me. My wording shows I'm not familiar with wireless networking etc. thanks

you will need to log into the router and set up your username and password, have you done this?

i'm trying to find the manual - its on your CD
YOU DO NOT need the CD to set this all up

i look for the manual and see if i can find a step by step set up

thanks for your reply
If you mean by logging into your router by typing in 192.168.1.1. in web browser, this says unable to connect to internet and doesn't take me any further. I have a guide and the guide shows this is where I would type in a user name and password. I haven't been able to get this far.

do you have your router connected to the PC correctly

then enter the Number
see the link

what happens

we may need to start at beginning and step through a number of details, cant find a manual online

first
How exactly are you connecting the router

post the following results from your PC

start>
control panel>
system>
hardware tab>
device manager button>

network adapters
click on the + sign

post backs whats there

also any ! X or ?

------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

It probably is best to start from the beginning.
I have access to a guide http://uk-tiscali.custhelp.com/cgi-b...p_new_search=1
Hope you can open the above link
Basically I run from the router a RJ-11 DSL cable to a filter and plug into my extension telephone lead and plug in a yellow ethernet RJ-45 connection cable to router and run to the connection on the back of my tower. Also I plug in the power supply.

The answers to your questions are as follows:-
In device manager-network adapters I have
1394 net adapter
Broadcom 440 x 10/100 interated controller
USB ADSL WAN adapter

In ipconfig/all I get
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\ipconfig/all

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : HALLWAY
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

roller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-43-01-59-FB

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0

C:\Documents and Settings\

when I go into my network connections and disconnect from my current tiscali broadband connection and try to enable my LAN connection I get a error disabling connection message that saids
It is not possible to disable the connect at this time. this connection may be using one or more protocols thjat do not support plug and play, or it may have been initated by another user or the system account.

I hope this is enough information. thanks

There should be a factory reset buttom on the router
reset it and log into your router and set it up again

Please be very clear about the meaning of logging into your router. As I previously said if you mean typing into the web browser 192.168.1.1. and enter then nothing happens. It justs stays on connecting. No admin page comes up. I beginning to doubt that I have connected the cables correctly. I sent you information above regarding connection. Am I doing this correctly. It seems there is only one place the connectors can go in so I thnk I'm doing right. Did the info help.
Also I looked into the links you sent, www.resnthttp://kb.resnet.purdue.edu/viewarticle.php?articleid=1874&searchid=&refid=2
which said the problem could be caused by a virus. i followed their recommended link for removeal and downloaded spybot.com and ran a scan. It can back with 75 problems, which seem alot, but I fix.
I've since rebooted and reset router but still not got any further.

me again. I've since been back onto http://www.resnthttp//kb.resnet.purd...rchid=&refid=2
and there is a final section that says if all else fails try winsock fix tool which can be found at www.spychecker.com. I've read the reviews and many people have rated this but as I'm not certain in what it actually does so I've haven't downloaded it. should I or stay well away?

If you have XP-SP2 or SP3, use the proper repair, not the Winsock tool.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Doris, Unless I'm interpreting your statement incorrectly"Basically I run from the router a RJ-11 DSL cable to a filter and plug into my extension telephone lead and plug in a yellow ethernet RJ-45 connection cable to router and run to the connection on the back of my tower. Also I plug in the power supply."

The router should plug directly into the telephone line! Not into the filter! Only any phone sets should be plugged into the filter!

Your instructions have really thrown me!! The RJ-DSL cable from the router only has ADSL plugs therefore cannot plug straight into the telephone socket. It needs to go into a filter to act as the connecter as the filter has a telephone plug.

The filter plugs into the telephone connector
Then the telephone and the Modem/router plug into the filter

Thats the ADSL UK configuration

so NOT as described in previous post by Benny Bumble

Hi, Sorry about that! Your configuration obviously is different than mine. My Westell 6100 plugs directly into the phone line. Any handsets plug into filters (lo-pass). As I prefaced my post "unless I'm misinterpreting" I'm sorry I confused you.
