router or ethernet card?
I have a Dell desktop running Windows 2000 and AT&T DSL. Had virtualy no problems. My daughter just bought a used computer from a friend of hers. It is a HP running Windows XP. I got a used router from my son-in-law. It is a D-Link DI-604. The router came in the box with the instructions and everything. I got it all hooked up and everything worked perfect! On the first try even! The next morning when she went to get on her "new" computer, the internet wouldnt hook up. It said something about no or slow connection. To make a long story short, sometimes it works sometimes it dont. No rhyme or reason to it. I am thinking it is either the router or the ethernet card that is bad. Is there a way to check and find out which one it is? The only thing I know to do is to move the computers around. But that is really more work than I wanted to do. Unhook everything, move everything, hook it all back up, ect. Any other thoughts or ideas?

Let's try to find a rhyme or reason.

Is the "sometimes it dont" after a boot, or restart, or Hibernation, or Standby?

Is the router on or off overnight? Same question for the PC.

Well, the other day she couldnt get it to work. So she came up and used my computer. When I got home I tried her computer and it worked just fine. So I shut the computer down and restarted. Then, no internet. Router was on overnight. PC was off.

With those answers nothing comes to mind; it should be working consistently.

Let's see the following for a time when she has internet access and again when she does not ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Ok, I am starting to think it is a bad router. She had unhooked the router the other day. Once I got post #4 I went and hooked everything back up. I had her computer logged on to the net, in fact the last message, message 5, was from her computer. I didnt turn her computer off or log off the net, just walked away. Came back a couple of hours later and it was not logged on to the net. And wouldnt log on. So, I came back upstairs, to my computer, that was sleeping. Woke it up, and tried to log on to the net, nothing! And my computer always logs on with no problems. Now my thoughts are, no router=no problems on my PC. With router=problems on both PC's. Must be a bad router. Does this make sence to you? Or could it be something else?

If makes sense, but w/o data there's little else to say.

When a PC (connected to a network when it was last active) comes out of hibernation, standby or sleep it may or may not be able to communicate on the network before a Restart. It seems to depend on the router (or modem), BIOS, OS, network card and driver. Success may be always, never, or random. When this is a problem the only easy thing for most of us to fix is to make sure we have the latest correct driver.

For router problems look for a firmware upgrade. Then reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

How do I get and install the latest firmware upgrade? Also, should I get her PC hooked back to the net, and tell the PC not to go into sleep mode or power down. Then see what happens?

Get firmware from your router manufacturer's web site. With the revision you can proceed from here (assuming United States): http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp

There should be an "upgrade" action in the router's config pages. If you don't have the user manual download that also from the above site.

EDIT: Sorry, you'll probably have to start here: http://support.dlink.com/downloads/#

I will work on upgrading. But here is something else I just figured out. When the net goes down, it goes down on both PC's. I restarted her PC and got it on the net. Disabled the sleep mode and told it to never shut down. Then we left for a while, came back home and no internet. Turned off the modem and router for a couple of minutes then turned them back on. Now the net is back up and running at both PC's.

Went to bed last night and both PC's had access to the net. Shut down both PC's. Woke up this morning, no net. I turned off the router for a couple of minutes. When I turned it back on, there was the net.

Just as a last chance type of thing, do you think it would do any good to reset the router? I remember reading some where on here not to use the wizard after a reset. Would that apply to me too? Or should I reset and use the wizard? Or just toss it in the trash and get a new one?

When the router is not working do you see symptoms such as all lights stuck on? Or all lights off? My DI-784 used to quit working with all lights stuck on. If I set it on end it would always work, but not if lying flat on a table. From that I gathered it was overheating.
