Sudden connectivity problems on Vista
OK. I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon and ask for help with my connection issues.

I've got an HP laptop with Vista Business on it. I've been connecting to the internet through a wireless network (Netgear router) for about a month with no issues. But suddenly, out of the blue, no more connection:
- "Local only" access to an unidentified public network (Huh?)
- "Limited connectivity" to an unidentified public network...

No external interference. I have 2 computer next to each other: one connecting, other not...

What I've done so far (to a point where I'm ready to throw my computer out the window... ):

- Release and renew ipconfig : "Unable to connect your DHCP server"
- Specifying a static IP address (for Internet Protocol v.6 and v.4)
- Uninstalled and reinstalled my WLAN adapter (Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN)
- Pinging : transmit failed, error code 1231.
- Uninstalling my Norton anti-virus software
- Restart my computer MULTIPLE times.
- Disabled my firewall

Nada.

This is what I get when I run "ipconfig /all" in my DOS command prompt:

Definite answer? Probably not. We can suggest some steps that may work to solve the issue.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried them, and outcome: It didn't work.
Still have only "limited connectivity".

Got more suggestions?

I've even considered going for the "File > Restore Defaults" option in the the Computer Setup (F10 during startup), but I don't know what might happen...

I don't mind resetting settings. As long as my content stays intact, I'm up for anything.

Thanks!

Did you try a system restore?

Like from a backup? I'm really bad with backups... The latest backup I have is of when I first got my computer, i.e. factory settings.

Like I said, if I can be sure that all my content will be save and waiting for me when I'm done, I'll do almost anything. But I'm not tech-savvy enough to trust myself with these kind of decisions...

No, a system restore, not a complete copy. You do know about System Restore in XP and Vista, right?

Take a look at this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial143.html

Have never done any hardcore computer maintenance, so no, not really... (I know, I know. A lesson well-learned...)

But I know about it now, and I've restored my system to a point where I know everything was working still working. And guess what?!

My internet seems to be working again, and my personal docs are OK!

Thank you for your patience. I really appreciate it.
Enjoy the weekend!

I was having the same exact problem with my new custom built desktop except it has dual-ethernet. I uninstalled Comodo Firewall and everything went back to normal.
