Installed Vista on my laptop...now PCMCIA card won't connect
Hi all.

I have a Thinkpad T42 Laptop which was running XP Pro. I installed Windows Vista on it.
It runs great, it just wont connect to my Netgear WG511 PCMCIA Wireless network card.

The card was working fine on XP. I installed the card on the laptop.

It sometimes says "Wireless Networks are Available" but it won't display any names. I have tried it on a couple of networks to no avail.

I also tried disabling my firewall..but no luck...I was able to connect to the net by plugging my modem directly into my modem...but I need it to run of the PCMCIA card.

HELP!

Thanks to anyone who can assist

Did up upgrade the firmware on the card and load the latest Vista drivers? Here's the download page: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WG511.asp

If there are no Vista drivers, my guess is that it's probably really not compatible with Vista. I suspect you need a new card if you want to use it with Vista.

When I click on the More info link: http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adap...ers/WG511.aspx I see a picture of the card. Is that a v2 after the model number?

yes...only because Netgear no longer has a link fot the Wg511 original. The one in the picture in the ebay listing is the one I have. the v2 is black.

I have seen numerous forum posts by others who say they get the original wg511 to connect to the internet wirelessly, but they can't share files on Vista laptops..All i want is the internet.

Please can anyone offer assistance???

Is this the version of drivers you're using? If not, please try these.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103199.asp

Follow the instructions exactly, especially the part about removing the card before installation of the new drivers.

Ok. I have tried a new updated PCMCIA card as well as a USB Wireless. I know these 100% work with Vista laptops.

Apparently the Thinkpad T42 laptop which I have is very hard to set up to connect wirelessly. I have searched the net and cannot find any guide. I could get me technician to set it up, but he said it will take ages and he bills by the hour.

Can anyone help?

Have you reloaded the chipset drivers for that laptop?

Are you using WZC or the wireless driver's client. Try the other option if so.
