Direct Connection Quandary
Hello,

I am trying to connect two pc's directly through a serial cable and I am running into a problem. I successfully connected the two through hyperterminal but ran into problems when attempting to establish a PPP connection (got the Error 777 message). We think it might be a result of a firewall on the client pc that is possibly blocking some inbound or outbound ports. The host firewall is off, but the IT dept was pretty firm in saying that we could not take down the firewall on the client so my question is: Any ideas on what ports we should allow exceptions for?

Thanks,
Rusty

PPP connection? Hyperterminal? Why are you doing either of those?

Configure the machines as follows.

PC #1:
IP address: 192.168.9.1
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

PC #2:
IP address: 192.168.9.2
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses blank.

Make sure any firewalls are configured to put the 192.168.9.x subnet in the trusted zone.

Finally, you'll have to enable fine/print sharing on the machines and actually share one or more folders or drives.

Here's a page that describes the process in detail: http://www.howtodothings.com/compute...2-pcs-directly

Well, it's a bit strange. The pc's are connected through a leased line via leased line modems that are each connected to their respective pc by a serial cable. The goal is to be able to access a SQL server on the host using this connection. We were able to make the connection with two computers that were not under the jurisdiction of the IT dept. The problem arose when we tried to set up the same system using one of their computers, presumably due to the firewall but then again maybe I am wrong. I guess what I am hoping to know is what ports this kind of serial connection uses so I can allow the exception in the firewall. Or is there a way to set the port/ports that a direct serial connection uses? Thanks again.

Well, what is the exact make/model of the "leased line modems"?

Here is a link to some info on the modems. Thanks for your thoughts.

My question would be if you have an IT department, why are you trying to set this up yourself?

You do realize that since you are not connecting to the v.92 "server", which is a telco CO, the maximum connection speed of this link will be 33kbits, right?

Why try to use a leased line here, don't you have Internet access? I'd think a VPN would be a much better choice.
