Does anyone have any ideas? Greatful for answers.

I'm trying to connect two computers, using an utp cable. So I could transfer data between the two (I do not need to connect them on the internet or anything). But it does not work, so.. this is what i´m working with and what i have.

- 2 * XP Professional computers
- 1 * UTP Cable between these two
- Both have the same value entered for "workgroup"
- I have shared the folders I want to be visible over the network
- I have assigned them diffrent IP numbers (Im clueless here)
- I have gone through the wizzard a few times now...

Browsing the workgroup nothing pops up..

Ok, that´s the basics. Anyone with ideas

You need a crossover ethernet cable to directly connect two computers unless one of the ports is auto-sensing.

The IP addresses have to be in the same subnet.

You have to enable file and printer sharing; one way is with the Network Setup Wizard, which may be what you meant by "have gone through the wizzard a few times."

3rd party firewalls (security suites) must be configured for the desired access.

Can you ping both ways by IP address? By computer name?

If/when you have the right cable and firewalls taken care of please show for both ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following commands:

nbtstat -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Configure the machines as follows.

PC #1:
IP address: 192.168.9.1
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

PC #2:
IP address: 192.168.9.2
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses blank.

Make sure any firewalls are configured to put the 192.168.9.x subnet in the trusted zone.

Finally, you'll have to enable fine/print sharing on the machines and actually share one or more folders or drives.

i, thank you for the respons.

The nbstat -n command doesn't do anything. The computer does not recognize the command.

When I type the IPCONFIG /ALL command on my laptop or just ipconfig the response is simply: IP-configuration for windows (again, translated from swedish) and nothing more

Another thing is that the network card has a constant light, seems a bit strange..

Well, an empty IPCONFIG indicates that Windows doesn't see any working network hardware, which is probably the issue. The IPCONFIG you posted looks fine for that computer.

As far as NBTSTAT, what is the EXACT error, since that's a valid command.


For the computer with no IPCONFIG results, please post this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Stupid computer! It should know that you meant nbtstat -n (notice two t's).

Oops, turns out it helps to have the drivers in place... now when the hardware is working so is the connection. Sometimes you just feel like jumping of the roof ) Well.. a few details are all that are left, but thank you for your help with this.
