Notebook not pulling IP address from my router - plz help!
So, i got a new laptop and went to hook it up to my Linksys wireless router. It would connect to it but it would say "Connected to unknown network" and i would not have any internet access. I just got the router so i thought the router was bad. But, my 2 room mates connect to it just fine and everything works for them... So, what i did was give my laptop a static ip address on the same network (192.168.1.50) and put the dns and gateway as the router itself (192.168.1.1) and everything works fine.... my question now, is because i want to carry my laptop to school and other places, i dont want to have to switch it back to obtain ip automatically everywhere i go and change it back again when I get home, what could be the problem? I read online that my DHCP service might be corrupted given the symptoms because if i can connect with a static IP, that means the router is working fine and the driver is working fine.... I have windows vista and i have no idea how to use it like i did in XP, so im not even really sure where to begin.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Enable DHCP and then post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
