Solved: ip address problems
hi everybody!
i have a netgear wireless router, and recently i was having problems with it. randomly throughout the day any page i tried to load would come up totally blank. i completely reset all the settings on the router and re-did all of the setup for it and it's been working great, except something else came up. i have a mac and a pc with windows xp, the mac connects to the router no problem, but my pc gets stuck on "acquiring network address". however, if i connect the pc to the router with an ethernet cable it works fine. i have dynamic ip, but even with all the wireless settings for auto, all i get is 0.0.0.0. i have tried running cmd and renewing the ip and it tells me "request has timed out. unable to contact your dhcp server". if i tell it to use a fixed ip address, it says that it is connected, but any page i go to says "can't find server". if i ping a site with a fixed ip, it works no problem, but still my browser won't load. if someone could tell me how to get it to automatically find an ip, or even get it to work with a fixed ip, i would really appreciate it. i don't like having to use a wire with my wireless network.

(from a JohnWill post)

IP addresses of 0.0.0.0 are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
1. DHCP Service not running.
2. Duplicate IP address on the network.
3. Bad NIC card drivers.
4. Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
1. Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
2. Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, reboot the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
3. Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
4. Replace the Network Interface Card.

Still get IP 0.0.0.0? If you or we find another cause of all zero IPs I'm sure JohnWill will be glad to add it to his list (and I'll add it to my copy).

Have you checked all the network services on that computer?

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Windows Zero Configuration (wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

Glad you got it working, but I don't think Computer Browser service was causing the 0.0.0.0 IP. I can stop my Computer Browser service and still release and renew IP fine.

You can mark this "Solved" using the button at the upper left of your 1st post.
