Big Network deconnection troubles: thanks in advance for helping me out!
Well since two days i have this problem.
We're 9 on a connection on a linksys WGA200G modem/router
Everything worked fine till two days ago.
Now whenever one of my roommates connects himselfto the network, no-one has internet (excepted sometimes himself). This happens almost immediately.
When it happens no-one can even connect to the modem (using http://192.168.1.1, it just says "unable to make connection")
When i go check the router all green lights are ok, excepted the internet one.(which is turned off)
The weird thing is that even if im wired to the modem, i cant connect to it and my computer doesnt detect a connection.
My only way out till now is cutting the power of the modem and then re-power it!

Problem is, the guy doesnt want to believe he is deconnecting everyone. (i'm 99% percent sure it's him making the network fail) so i cant expect much of his help.
The only thing (i see) that could be part of the problem is that he is running on a mac computer, while everyone else uses windows.
(the problem occurs both if he's wired or when he connects himself wireless)

I tried updating the firmware, but it didnt chqnge the problem at all...
I really dont know how i could solve this! so if anyone knows, thx for the help!

Sorry for the long "text", i hope i explained it clear enough.
Thanks in advance for the help

I'll be back in arround 5 hours so don't expect a too quick reply of me if you need some precisions, but quick help would be very nice!

Truthfully, I think someone has plugged the modem into one of the router LAN connections instead of the router's WAN connection. Nothing he could do with a Mac would do what you're describing.

Let's see this from a connected Windows computer. when he's not connected.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

you might want to think i'm a "noob" as i see how you talk to me (nothing wrong with that)
In fact i do know quiet a lot about computers, and a little bit about networks.
But as this problem appeared verry strange to me i decided to post it here!

- The device is a wifi-router/modem from linksys (WGA200G)
- When the problem happens, NO-ONE cant connect to it! (so i have to unplug it, it's the only way to do it as i can't access the device by normal means to hard/soft reboot it)
- I am connected with a cable to the router, most of my roommates are with wifi, but the problem is still the same for all of us.
- I also think it's weird the mac is doing that, but or he has strange things on his computer, or the router/modem is broken. (but then why does it only fail with him?)

here is the ipconfig result (dunno how it's gonna help you )

Sorry, my conputer is configured in french, but i don't think it should be a problem.

Given the new information that it's a one piece unit, I suspect the unit has some sort of problem.

I think my first attempt would be to upgrade the firmware to the latest available from the manufacturer, then reset to factory defaults and reconfigure the router.

I did upgrade the firmwire, reset to factory and reconfigure the router; nothing helped

I also contacted the online linksys support, the only thing they told me was to change some wireless settings (as if that would change anything, because when there are only wired computers this also happens) I tried it and as i expected, it didn't help.
So, i'm still left with this problem!

I'm also suspecting the unit to have some problems, but i want to be sure before returning it!

ps. I know it's weird, but the problem seems to happen only when one of our roommates connects himself to the internet...

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I made those ping right now, they are quite high, but that's because we're 9 on a single line and some of them are DLding stuff.
i can make those pings again late tonight if you desire they will be a lot lower then now!

Ofcourse when the problem happens i can't ping anything at all, as the modem/router doesnt respond

Some french lessons for you then:

Envoi d'une requête 'ping' sur 192.168.1.101 avec 32 octets de données*:
= Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data

Réponse de 192.168.1.101*: octets=32 temps<1ms TTL=128
= reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Paquets*: envoyés = 4, reçus = 4, perdus = 0 (perte 0%)
= Packets: sent=4, recieved = 4, lost= 0 (0% loss)

Durée approximative des boucles en millisecondes :
= Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Moyenne = 0ms
= Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Délai d'attente de la demande dépassé.
= Timeout

Normally you should be able to understand everything with this ;p

This sure seems to be something about the router, you shouldn't be able to block other people like that by just connecting.

My next step would be a new router.
