Exclamation Confusing Networking
Hello,

Okay, so what I'm trying to do may seem a bit strange. My buddy and I share a wireless connection to the internet. The wireless connection is in his apartment next to mine and I connect to it using the wireless card in my laptop. I have two other desktops in my apartment. They are connected to my laptop via a wired router:

Wireless Router ))))) Laptop------Router-----Computer 1, Computer 2

All computers are running windows XP. Currently they all connect to the internet through the laptop using the internet connection sharing feature and up until now, that has worked just fine. However, I recently bought an iPod touch which has wifi. It has certain features that work only through wifi connections, for example, remote control of iTunes via wifi. This remote works fine on the laptop, because it is connected to the wireless network.

What I want to do is be able to use this remote feature from Computer 1. Is there a way to connect all three computers to the wireless network. I have attempted to bridge the connection but when I do so, the laptop won't connect to the internet, nor will any of the other computers.

I hope that was clear enough. I'm very confused. Can anyone help?

You will have to make sure that both interfaces on your computer are on different subnets (which means both routers also have to be on different subnets from eachother) to make your computer act as a router itself. and these subnets have to be different from the other networks.

You will also want to assign a static ip to your laptop and use that IP as the default gateway for your "wired" router. (some routers have a seperate ethernet port for the "external" internet line, and this would be where you connect the laptop.

Its complicated, i know... just buy a wireless router that can be set to work in "Client Mode" and connect that to your friend's router.

long story short... the other computers rely on the "wired" router for the internet, and you need to teach your router to rely on your laptop for internet. Or.... heres an idea, change the "default gateway" on the desktops to the ip address on your laptop's ethernet connection. Ive never tried that. (internet still wont work on your computer though, subnetting issue that is real tough to resolve and requires access to your friends router and his computers too)

wireless routers are running cheap nowadays though.
