Unhappy Unable to connect to router or internet
Hello there,

Heres my problem:- I'm trying to get a computer working which is in my work place which has previously worked a few weeks ago. There are another 2 computers which are connected to the internet fine without problems.

Its running Windows XP, and in network connections it shows the local area network icon only and shows connected but it only seems to be receiving as the sent bytes are on zero.

Heres what Ive tried:- Ive tried typing in the routers IP address in internet explorer but it doesnt even get to the screen where you can type the username and password. None of the machines would work with obtaining an IP automatically (DHCP) so I manually put in IP addresses in these machines and these are working perfectly, Ive got for instance [IP address 192.168.0.10, Subnet mask 255.255.255.0, Default gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS the same as default gateway....the only thing different on the 2nd machine is the IP address obviously.

Ive done exactly the same settings on the third machine but it just does what ive explained above. I forgot to mention that this is a fully wired LAN.

Any help would be much appreciated and any information you need from me just let me know.

Thanks in advance

Dean

On the problem computer can you ping the router?

(Open a Command prompt and type

ping 192.168.0.1 )

Do you have a non-Windows firewall on the problem PC? If so, it may be blocking.

Try these repairs ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following commands:

nbtstat -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Ive tried pinging the router but it just gives me timed out requests.

It was working ok before i had a holiday for a few weeks, all i did was disable the connection whilst i was away and when i enabled it when i got back it wasn't working.

Ive tried disabling the windows firewall but it has no other software running that could block it, I even turned off the antivirus just incase.

Im not in work till tomorrow so i'll post all the info for you tomorrow night.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll keep you posted.

These are the repairs I meant to post

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

I wonder why none of the computers will work with dynamic addressing. Is it because you have the router's Dhcp server disabled?

Assuming your IP configuration is correct (and you confirmed in your first post that it is correct) then the failure to ping the router indicates

a. non-Windows firewall blocking,
b. bad router LAN port,
c. bad ethernet cable,
d. corrupted or incorrect ethernet driver, or
e. bad ethernet adapter.

You should be able to check out b and c by "mixing and matching" with the other computers.

Hello mate,I dont actually have Admin access to the router itself so I cannot check but im guessing its not enabled as on every machine it just sticks at acquiring an IP address and doesnt connect. The machine im trying to get working has worked but then its just stopped like I said when I enabled the connection after a week.I suppose I could try a new ethernet cable to eliminate that. I tried today closing Windows defender and even disabling the windows firewall but still no joy. I did notice today when I left it for hours it had actually sent bytes but nowhere near the amount of bytes received so whether that helps you diagnose it I dont know.I will try those command lines you posted that I haven't tried and let you know how I get on tomorrow. Thanks again

Consult with the IT department or whoever manages the network.
