Question Cant find primary DNS
My roommate has a problem with his laptop nowdays, and hes pretty much computer illiterate and has no clue how it happened.

His computer is a HP Pavilion dv6500 notebook, hes running Vista and his network card is an "Inter(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection". His problem is however that it can't connect to the internet through the wireless card. Cable works just fine. The computer finds the local network when going wireless, and when I tried vistas automatic diagnose and repair option it told me it couldn't connect to the primary DNS.

Ive tried vistas repair option twice since that, with no luck. Ive also tried disable/enable his wirelesscard a couple of times.

Running cmd and ipconfig /all shows that the only difference between my laptop and his is this line found under Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connections:
DHCPv6-IAID...........:234888055
which I frankly don't know what is. It should also be said his computer is in Norwegian, so the techsupport here at our college isn't able to help him.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Make sure he has the latest driver for the wireless adapter from the PC manufacturer's web site.

Disable encryption on the router, make sure MAC Address filtering is not locking him out, and try to connect that way. If successful you can probably re-enable encryption and reconnect.

I dont have access to the router, as im living in the dorms at a college, but from previous experience his MAC isnt filtered out as hes able to connect to the internet when plugged in. He already has the latest driver for his wireless card. Take in mind his OS is in Norwegian, so the info displayed here will be in norwegian as well. It shouldnt be hard to understand though, as I did it.

Thanks for a quick response guys!!

Looks like a good IP configuration. Open a Command prompt and try these pings. Results can be posted the same way you did the ipconfig /all.

ping 172.16.158.70 (or whatever the current IP address is)
ping 172.16.158.1
ping 206.190.60.37
ping yahoo.com

When you, or somebody else, connects by wireless do you get the same DNS servers that he gets?

When he connects by ethernet does he get the same DNS servers?

His comp couldnt find host yahoo.com and all ping attempts timed out; all packaged were lost.

Same DNS servers on both computers, both wireless and connected by ethernet.

It sounds like the DNS Server is the issue.

Let's do a stack repair first, and if that doesn't do it, we'll try replacing the DNS server.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If that doesn't get it, let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

That sounds like more than DNS. I would suspect firewall except that ethernet working makes a firewall problem unlikely.

Maybe those repairs will work. If not, probably a problem with the driver or the wireless adapter itself.

Double or triple check that the driver is the latest from HP's web site. If it is, uninstall it (using Device Manager) and reinstall it, just in case the installed version is corrupted.
