"View Workgroup Computers" Freezes +more.
I am trying to setup my home network. I have a Dell laptop e1705 and a custom rig. Both machines are running XP PRO w/ SP3. I ran the Network setup Wiz. They are both on the same workgroup. Now here is my problem. Now every time I go to My Network Places then click on View Workgroup Commuters that window freezes. I have let it run for over an hour to see if it would find something, but it just froze. So I attempted to search (via windows search) for all computers on the network. As soon as I click search it to Freezes and does not respond.

The laptop is wireless and the desktop is wired. Any ideas or do you need any more information?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Does this happen on both the laptop and the desktop?

What happens if you explore 'my computer' and drill down through the 'my network places' > microsoft windows network > network name > workgroup computer names > folder names ?

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Next, check this:

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Windows Zero Configuration (wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

That fixed the problem of Freezing when i clicked on "View Workg..."
All the services are running on both computers and still no luck. I can ping one computer form the other though. Any other ideas?

You can ping each way by name?

Let's see this from each of the computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Since each of the machines thinks it's the master browser, they don't see each other on the network. This is almost always a firewall configuration issue. I'd start by disabling ALL firewalls to get them talking. You have to be able to ping by computer name before you'll get file/print sharing working.

Same as by IP except you put the computer name in the command.

PING name

I can’t ping the computers by name or IP now, but on the laptop I can now see the other computer on “View Workgroup Computers”. I have both hard drives on the Desktop shared. I cannot map to either of them. Nor can I open the desktop computer via “View Workgroup Computers”.

If you can't ping by name, the top suspect here is a firewall. Since both think they're the master browser, that reinforces my belief that you have a firewall component blocking access.

What is the easiest way to see if you are correct?

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection 11

And windows Firewall as far as computer protection goes.

I have a WRT54GL router, and do not see anything on there that might be a firewall.

What should my next step be?

Symantec Endpoint Protection has a firewall component, disable that.
