Laptop ethernet recognition
So I had at one time been able to connect to Xbox Live. I picked up the wireless signal with my laptop then sent it through an ethernet cable to my Xbox. I didn't play Xbox for a few month though and I can no longer connect. I think my primary problem is that the ethernet cable isn't even recognized by the computer. I have seen similar topics on this matter but nothing that I can derive an answer from.

My only components under Network Adapters are the 1394 Network Adapter and Intel Pro/Wireless Network 3945ABG Connection and neither have a yellow ? or !.

My setup for my wireless under ipconfig/all is:
Node Type................Broadcast
Ip Routing enabled......No
Wins Proxy enabled.....No

Ethernet Adapter Network wireless connection:
Connection specific DNS suffix.......
Description.........Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Connection
Physical Address........00-13-02-24-E9-5D
Dhcp enabled.........No
IP Address.............192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask...........255.255.255.0
Default Gateway.......192.168.1.1
DNS Servers..............192.168.1.1

I have also tried to install an ethernet driver but I didn't really know what kind my computer needed so if that's the problem I don't know how I would actually go about installing the right ethernet driver...

Actually, ICS is not the answer to a missing adapter driver!

First guess is the wired NIC is disabled in the BIOS. Second guess is that it's drivers are missing or corrupt.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices under Other Devices display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Can't believe I missed that.

I looked and saw the wireless adapter looked good, saw his comment about no ! in the device manager and didn't even realize I don't see a second adapter.

Only two things under network adapters are "1394 Net Adapter" and "Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Connection".
Neither of them have an !, ? or an X.
I just hit "show hidden devices" and a lot more showed up:
"1394 Net Adapater"
"Direct Parallel"
"Intel Pro/1000 Network Connection- Packet Scheduler Miniport"
"Intel Pro/1000 Network Connection #2- Packet Scheduler Miniport"
"Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Connection"
"Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Connection- Packet Scheduler Miniport"
"WAN Miniport (IP)"
"WAN Miniport (IP)- Packet Scheduler Miniport"
"WAN Miniport (L2TP)" "WAN Miniport (Network Moniter)"
"WAN Miniport (Network Moniter)- Packet Scheduler Miniport"
"WAN Miniport (PPPOE)"
"WAN Miniport (PPTP)"

None of them have the !, ?, or X by them.
After hitting "how hidden devices", a device popped up under the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" called "Serial" which has a yellow ! point next to it but that's the only one out of all the drivers.

It sounds like your wired network adapter is either broken or disabled in the BIOS. Have you checked to see if it got disabled?

The BIOS is the firmware that boots Windows from the hard disk. When the computer first starts up, there is a key you can hit to enter the BIOS configuration, normally it's displayed for a short period of time on the screen during the POST (Power On Self Test).
