Unhappy Network Access
Hi,

First of all nice work with this forum because it is very helpful. you are doing a good job.

now my problem is that i have a pc and on it i keep all the files to be accessed by every other pc. the problem is that when i type the address to the pc it will ask me for a username and a password. is there a way to remove it.

note: i already disabled simple file sharing, but isn't working.

thanks for your help.

You should enable Simple Sharing, then run the following script.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : FIXANON.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXANON.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Reboot the computer.

thanks for your reply. but it didn't solve my problem. because when i tried view the shared files from another computer it asked me for a username and a password.

look let me explane my problem better.

I have two computer \\pc1 and \\pc2. now from \\pc1 i need to access the files on \\pc2 but when i type the address and press enter it will ask me to enter the username and the password of the other computer. now i need to remove that so when i want to see the \\pc2 files i and who type this address see the files without entering anything.

maybe this explains better

Create a user account on the computer with the shared files that matches the name/password of the connecting computer. This will eliminate the password prompt.

ok yes that can do it. but i need to connect many and different pc's and it is not possible to create a user for every pc.

the thing is that it is possible because before i made a new installation it was set like i'd like to set it but now i can't do it.

You're saying that with Simple File Sharing, and after doing the FIXANON.REG it is still prompting for login/password?

You've implied XP Pro or Media Center, but it would be good if you stated which one. John tends to have a reason in mind when he asks "What version of WIndows?".

I was fishing for the patch level.

You can revert to the old setting by changing that script I posted.

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000001
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

If you do that and reboot, how do the symptoms change with Simple File Sharing not selected?

I'd try comparing all the settings to see what's different.
