new laptop, wont connect to internet
Hi guys, ill start off by saying im a novice, but ill do my best.

I know that i have a wireless Linksys router that i guess my family has been using as a wired router for the past year. I just bought a new laptop and wanted to try hooking up to wireless internet in my home. I can connect to my router through the laptop, and it says that i'm connected, but it wont let me access the internet.

In the status it says that i am not connected to either the IPv4 or IPv6. Please help, and ask questions if you need. I want to get this resolved.

I dont know if this is important, but i am currently using my laptop by just connecting the router which is hooked up to my modem, to my laptop.
This may help some of you?

That display looks a bit scrambled! Let's try a stack repair and repost the IPCONFIG /ALL

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thank you for the help, but it doesnt seem to have worked. I went through all the steps, and they seemed to work, so i rebooted my computer, but after getting back on, i still cannot connect to the internet. Any other ideas? If you need any other information, please ask.

Are you saying you have no internet access when connected by ethernet, as in the above ipconfig /all? Or are you saying you are having trouble with wireless?

If the latter, is the wireless switched on (assuming an integrated adapter)? Does the wireless show as OK in Device Manager under Network Adapters? What happens when you try to connect to your wireless network? Please show an ipconfig /all for that attempt.

hi, thanks for trying to help. I cannot get internet, wirelessly. I can get the internet on my laptop, being that i am using it right now, but it is wired through my router. When i unplug it, i can still find my home network, using my laptop, and even "connect" to it, but it wont let me access the internet. It says in the network adapters that everything is working correctly. I'm not really sure what is going on, i think i might have to take it in to get looked at tomorrow.

here ya go

You apparently now have ICS enabled ("IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes"). Why???

I see no evidence of any wireless hardware. I don't understand how you can detect your wireless network. Does the wireless connection appear in Network Connections? Is it enabled?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Network Adapters

Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter
MAC Bridge Miniport
Realtek RTL8102E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)

There are no red X's on any of the adapters, and no yellow question marks or exclamation points in the device manager. The only thing i have done, and this was yesterday, so i dont think it could have any effect, is i tried disabling the MAC Bridge Miniport, i forget why at this point, but if you think i should enable it, let me know.

To TerryNet, i'm not sure to be honest, i know for sure that i can connect to my wireless router in my home. I'm not sure what the problem is, if i cant get it figured out, i'm just gonna have to go take it in. There is definititely the chance that i dont understand what's going on enough to fix it, but i dont feel like i'm doing anything wrong.

The MAC Bridge Miniport is usually a link to something like an AV or firewall package. Disabling that may affect your connection, try to enable it again.

no luck. This laptop actually seems really slow for being brand new and having 4gb of ram and what not, so its probably not a bad idea that i get it checked out.

The mystery here is why we see no wireless hardware in the IPCONFIG, yet you see it in Device Manager with no errors.

Do you see the wireless adapter in Network Connections?

Try doing a wireless reset by resetting the wireless from inside the router.
Try putting the default gateway in the web browser. What screen do you see?
