Question Solved: Media disconnected... resycler/boot.com
I have 2 broadband-connected computers in my home network, one of them lost Internet connection today out of the blue. I found traces of "resycler" and "boot.com" on the system when double-clicking my C: drive gave me an error message naming them both. I removed them so I can access my C: drive again, but now my Internet is completely unavailable and this is mystifying.

My network adapter (2Wire PC Port) is installed and the Power light is green, while the Network light is off.

ipconfig/all produced the following results:

Windows IP Configuration
Host Name: HOME-499F9C4DE2
Primary Dns Suffix:
Node type: Broadcast
IP Routing enabled: No
WINS Proxy enabled: No

Ethernet adapter local area connection 10
Meda state: Media disconnected
Description: 2Wire PC Port
Physical address: 00-D0-9E-3C-D8-CC

Any assistance would be appreciated!!

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

ISP: BellSouth
DSL Modem/Router: 2Wire HomePortal 1100
Wired LAN connection
OS: Windows XP SP2
Internet browser: IE7

The error message given is "A network cable is unplugged." But I can't seem to find out why.

Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue? Yes, the broadband modem is working fine, with 3 green lights on.

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? No, the other computers on the LAN are working 100%.

Let's try this first.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

That may fix it, but I'm not too optimistic. This is usually a bad port on the router, bad cable, bad NIC, or the network drivers. I'd reload the latest drivers for the NIC, change the cable and use a different port on the router in that order. If that doesn't do it, it may be a bad NIC.

On final thing to try is boot in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way.

Thanks for the assistance.

So far I've got no changes. I tried the 2 netsh commands and went into Safe Mode w/ Networking, but still haven't seen any connection.

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I determine my NIC drivers? In the device manager, would it be under Network Adapters? If so, then they are fully up-to-date.

I would change my network cable if I could, but unfortunately I don't have another one. Although it was working fine just yesterday, and the power light is still on.

As for changing the port on the router, I'm not sure how to do that.

Move the cable to a different port on the router. Try that cable with a different computer.
