Alright, here's the problem. The new laptop is running Vista Home Premium. I am trying to network it to a desktop running XP Professional, so that files can be shared between the two computers.
The XP desktop can access files on the Vista laptop without any difficulty. I can get into Public Documents and access all files.
However, the Vista laptop cannot access any files on the XP desktop. At this point, I am only concerned with getting Vista to access the folder entitled "Shared Documents" on the Windows XP computer. When I first started working with this network, I could open the C: drive of the XP desktop from the Vista laptop, but none of the folders inside of it.
In trying to make the folder "Shared Documents" accessible to the Vista laptop, I went into the Security tab and gave every user in the list full control over everything. After I did this to the XP computer, the Vista computer suddenly started asking me for a user name and password to access the XP computer. However, the XP computer does not have any user names or passwords set at all, yet the Vista computer still wants them. If I try to enter anything at all in the user name or password lines and then press enter, I get the following error message:
"\\FAMILY (the name of the XP desktop) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again."
1. I have made sure both computers are running Windows Firewall only, and have set both firewalls to accept file and network sharing.
2. I have gone into folder options and unchecked "simple file sharing" so that the Security tab appears when I right click on folders and choose "Properties".
3. I have given every user in the user account permissions list full control to do anything to the folder.
4. I have made sure that the Workgroup name is the same on both computers. The XP computer is visible in the Network window on the Vista laptop, but I cannot get in.
5. I have made sure that I am an administrator on both the Vista laptop and the XP desktop.
Can anyone present a reasonable solution to this problem? I have spent the past few hours searching all the online forums I could find for a solution, but I have not found a way to get past either the password screen or the error message I am now receiving when I try to enter a password.
