Solved: XP connectivity / shared Internet connection problem
Hello:

New member!

I have an HP 2133 notebook networked via cable to a clone PC, both running Windows XP.

My Internet connection is via an Ovation USB stick on the Canadian Rogers 3G cell network.

Until recently, it all worked fine. I could access both computers' folders from each other, and the Internet from either.

I went on the road for a few days, taking the notebook with me as always. When I came back and re-connected, I got "limited or no connectivity' on BOTH computers for the Local Area Connection. (I used to get that frequently on the clone, but disabling and re-enabling usually fixed that.)

Having had some experience with this stuff, and after nosing around on the Internet, I tried assigning static IP addresses to both - 192.168.0.1 to the laptop, 192.168.0.2 to the clone.

That fixed the "limited or no connectivity' issue; I can ping each from the other, and after running the network set-up wizard, I can share files and the printer (which is attached to the clone).

But I cannot access the Internet from the clone! When I load Firefox, it looks for my home page, then tries to dial a dial-up connection (there aren't any now). So it comes up with "Page Load Error" - Address Not Found".

I can access the Internet from the laptop.

Only two things are different as far as I can tell:

1. There was a Windows update (automatic updates are enabled) while I was away, and I know sometimes those can screw stuff up. But when I tried to see my Update History, Microsoft demands I use Internet Exploder. But THAT says it needs "ActiveX to display this site, and to download it I should right-click on the content bar. I do, but of course there is no mention of ActiveX anywhere there, so I don't know what updates were installed so I can back them out! And they wonder why we all use Firefox...

2. While I was away, my kids tried to make the Ovation USB Internet stick work through one of their laptops using wireless capability so we/they could all share that connection. Sort-of worked. Can't begin to understand how that would have affected MY attempts at networking MY two computers when I plugged the stick back into my laptop.

I have tried every diagnostic tool and suggestion the Internet or MS seems to offer. As noted, I can ping by IP address, and by computer name - each computer shows up to the other. (When I try the '\\computername' command as one MS site suggested, it returns an 'invalid syntax' message.)

I can share files and the printer, just not the Internet connection. And yes, I have followed the instructions for sharing the Internet connection.

The odd thing is that when I used to just let everything happen automatically, assigning IP addresses, etc., it all worked fine. Now it doesn't!

Having scanned through these pages looking for a similar problem, I did not find anything quite the same. But I note that one true stalwart replier always wants the ipconfig /all data, so it follows, from both computers!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I have spent the better part of three days going 'round in circles on this...

Cheers,

Jim

On the laptop you do NOT have ICS enabled ("IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No").

On the CLONE PC it's better to use dynamic addressing; a static IP configuration will work but you need to also specify the Gateway and DNS server.

Since ipv6 can cause problems it's better to play safe and remove it:

Start - Run - ipv6 uninstall - OK

Hi TerryNet:

First, thanks so much for the quick reply!

And it SEEMS to be working so let's mark it 'solved' for the moment.

I guess not realizing that "IP routing" was "Internet Connection Sharing" is my excuse!

Also, I wasn't sure whether that should be enabled for the LAN or the Internet connection; I gather it is the latter.

It has taken all day to figure this out, and I'm still not entirely sure what I did. Every time I tried something I'd still have a problem - either the 'limited or no connectivity' thing would crop up again; or I'd get an attempt at dial-up on the Clone (which is there as I type, but when I click Cancel it DOES find the 'Net); or I could not access shared files across the LAN.

I didn't see ipv6 as even being on my system, but I ran the uninstall anyway. It just flashed momentarily and quit - is that all there is to it?

On occasion when I ran Network Setup Wizard, I would get a quick "pop" sound and a message about "your computer may not be protected - Windows Firewall is not enabled" or some such (it only stayed there for a second). Then the Wizard would quit and say it could not complete the connection. Of course it IS MS, so it didn't say why.

Anyway, after futzing around, doing things in various sequences, it now is functioning again. I have had to assign a static IP address to the laptop - still don't know why THAT changed; I never used to have to do that! - and dynamic to the Clone as you suggested.

Other than my usual 'enquiring minds need to know', I guess I should just be content that it works! Now we'll see if it STILL works when I disconnect and re-connect next time I'm on the road - or my kids start messing about again!

Thanks again.

Jim

Glad it's working.

You enable ICS on the connection that has the internet access to share with (give access to) others.

You know that ipv6 is on your system when you see those long addresses in hex, such as "IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::20c:6eff:fee6:4088%6".
