Exclamation VISTA and XP networking issue
Hi All,

Im one step away from tearing my hair ....just then I thought i should be seeking sage advice here

I have a Vista Loaded laptop connecting wirelessly to the internet using Belkin router and XP loaded desktop which is hard wired to router.

I was able to access shared folders on XP machine sometime ago but had to format the XP machine(desktop) for some reason ....and after the format reinstall I have again shared a few folders on the desktop xp machine...but whenever i try to access them from the vista machine (laptop)....it gives a username and password prompt. However none of my machines have a user accnout password setup .

m nt sure if this is known issue but i have tried quite a few things.

Also im able to access files on laptop from desktop without any issues.
these are things i have tried so far.

1) tried every possible Username and password combination
2) setup a the same username and password on both machines and tried to use that for accessing shared folders on XP
3) Disabled the password protected sharing on vista ( although that is relevant to accessing files on Vista but not on XP)

Im using vista ultimate on laptop and xp sp2 on desktop.

Any suggestions and value add comments are welcome ....but hoping to get out of this.

Turn on Simple Sharing on the XP machine if it's XP-Pro, see if that helps. If you have create a user account on the XP machine with the same name and password that is used to login to the Vista machine, the password prompt should have disappeared.

Its win Xp pRo...however turning on the simple file sharing will require me to put the sharing contents in a common folder which I dont want to do...as there is much data that I want to share.

I dont have password in any of the machines....however i did created the same username and password on vista and xp ....but that still did not resolve the issue.

AS i told ...this problem did not exist before but only after format reinstall...also iM able to access Vista folders without any issues.

Im not sure if there is a user policy in xp that disables password file sharing.
