Cannot access other pc
Hi, i have two windows xp professional computers. One is wired to my network through my router, and the other has a wireless N thumb drive that is connected to the router wirelessly. The wireless computer is able to access my wired computer completly and easily, but when i try to access my wireless computer though the workgroup option (the only way the computer is found) from the wired one, my access is denied. I don't know if this changes anything but the wired computer has service pack 3 and the other has service pack 2.

Thanks

Is there anything shared on the wireless. If not you will get that error.

What security software are you using on the wireless computer.

It sounds like you have the firewall turned up on the wireless computer to not allow inbound file sharing.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

In norton internet security you have to go to the main screen and hit home network or something like that. Click through the nag screen then on the left there is something about the network with a link saying details. In here you can set the trust level for the network. Set it to shared or full trust and the sharing should start to work.

If not uninstall it and see if the sharing starts working if it does I don't know what to say only I have moved about 6 or seven of my computers off of norton due to simular issues that would not resolve with the firewall. I have about 200. If it doesn't start working you know norton is not the problem just reinstall it it should pick your old install info back up and not loose a day of protection. At least it has on my computers where I have uninstalled and reinstalled to try to fix a problem.

Oh yeah on the ones I've changed over Bit Defender works well.

hey thanks a lot for the help, and yes john will, i think there is a ping problem because the cmd says i lost 4 packets after it timed out 4 times. I will now check the services on the computer and will get permission to unistall norton

(i ran the ping test on the computer that has working file share but i will soon run it on the other computer without working file share)

I'd uninstall Norton, then run the Norton Removal Tool, see if that helps.

Hi asweeba,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

What version of Norton Internet Security are you currently using? Please let me know.

In the meantime, even though the difference in Windows Service Pack's on your computers should not affect your ability to share files, I would encourage you to run Windows Update on both machines and make sure they both have all available updates from Microsoft as a first step.

After you have all of the Windows Updates applied, I would remove your current shares and recreate them. Also, make sure that the user accounts are set up correctly on both machines.

The next step is to go into the Norton internet Security setup and configure the "Trust Control" for each computer, which will allow the computers on your network access through the Norton Personal Firewall.

Lastly, if you are using Norton Internet Security 2006-2008, and have a valid subscription, you are entitled to a free update to Norton Internet Security 2009, which Is highly encouraged. The 2009 version consumes very few system resources and has many new and enhanced features to keep your computer protected against threats.

Let me know if you need additional assistance with configuring Norton Internet Security and also let me know what version you are currently using.

Thank you,
Mike
