Question Solved: suddenly random drop of wireless connection
Asus G1 Laptop, Intel Wireless 3945 ABG

This problem has only existed for the last 1.5 weeks or so. My wireless has been working just fine for over a year! No hardware changes.

The problem:

The laptop looses its wireless internet connection at random, without any apparent
reason. Before last week, it had been working fine for over a year and I am still in the same
network.

I searched the internet and the Asus forum for solutions, nothing worked.

Steps taken so far: updated (reinstalled) Intel network card with Intel's newest driver
version

Checked all Windows settings

Windows Firewall is turned off

all software seems to be up-to-date

power settings do not seem to be the problem either

newest bios installed.

Sometimes it works fine for almost a day. but then, suddenly it crashes again.
Sometimes it reaconnects again, sometimes a restart is necessary. It seems to me
that this is especially the case during certain times of the day (cant say for sure tho!)

I really dont know what to do anymore and this problem is really driving me mental.

I really hope you can give me some advise. I would really appriciate your help!!

Thanks a lot,

Johannes

Welcome to TSG:
Some basic things to try.
First,I assume you have a wireless router(make and Model would be good to know),as well as your ISP

Change the wireless channel(1/6/11) in US are preferred.Might be wireless interference.

Reset the router to it's default configuration.
Make sure you have the latest firmware for your router.
If none of that helps,if possible, direct connect to your modem. This will perhaps eliminate the router as a cause of the problem.

Hi and thanks for your reply,

I tried resetting the router many times. Didnt help. Its a Linksys router. However, I dont think this is the cause of the problem as it has been working for ages before the problem appeared. MORE importantly, two other vista laptops are connected to the same network and they do not have any problem.

I live in the UK and my ISP is Virgin Media.

I know it does not make much sence but I have a feeling that some programme is causing the problem. I just dont understand how software could cause this problem...

Programs lately installed are:
- windows live sign-in assistant
- winamp
- windows live essentials
- windows live-uploadtool
- tor (not installed, its the portable version)
- Gimp
- Google Updater
- CCleaner (could CC cleaner have damaged my regestry or somehting?)
- java update 12
- many cam 2.3
- mircrosoft siverlight
- FLV player 2.0

And by the way, Im running Norton (but I think for once, this is not Norton's fault

I dont know if this information helps, but you never know

Thanks

That's dangerous. Often laptop manufacturer's have to tweak Intel's wireless drivers to work in their system. Should get the latest from laptop manufacturer's web site.

Is there any wireless interference, especially from another network using your same or close channel?

Thanks for your reply

I doubt that there is a network interference cause there are no new networks around as far as I can see... would it help to clear them out in the network manager? (delete them) or would I have to change channels? but its working fine for the other two guys in the flat and they havent changed anything...

you might be right about the driver but 1. nothing changed in comparison what was installed before and 2. I know that someone else with a similar problem was told by asus to dowload the driver from intel

I don't know the layout of your place, but will point out that I once had my laptop in the living room getting blasted off the air by a very strong signal on my channel. But the signal wasn't even detectable in other rooms, including my router's location.

Also, are you somewhere that a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, not necessarily yours, could be interfering?

Hi JOJO:
Just as an aside,CCleaner has,as I remember,not such a great rep.here.
I would use it with a great deal of caution.
I have had the same experience as Terry.Moving the laptop did improve the situation, but changing the channel did finally fix the disconnects.

Would it be possible for you to give it a test close to one of your flatmate's location just to see if we are on the right course here?

Yea I was thinking about that as well. Of course I dont like the idea, but I will have to try if the same problem exists in other rooms. Will move to the living room now which is where the router sits.

I will let you know.

PS: no cordless phone that hadnt been there before.

Hi,

I tried the living room (next to the router) yesterday and I had no problems. But I did not have enough time so it might just be coincidence.

However, I just changed the network channel from 11 to 6 now. See what happens....

Will keep you updated.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that my wireless seems to be working fine now.

Still finding it strange that the channel seemed to be the cause of the problem, but at least its working now.

Solved (I hope^^)

Thanks for you advise!

Glad we could help.
Wireless interference is sometimes difficult to explain, once cordless phones have been taken out of the mix.
Changing channels is first thing we try,and in most cases,it works.
