Solved: mbps confusion
I have a network setup at my house. That network is run by a router with Ethernet and Wireless capability. My router is a Belkin 54g. that is powered by my modem which is run by Virgin Media. now the confusion is that my Modem and internet from Virgin Media is 2mbps (soon to be 10mbps) but my router is saying 54mbps. Would that ean my Internet is 2mbps and my networking is 54mbps or something else. Can somebody please help me by explaining the actual mbps for networking and internet.

I believe that the 54mbps refers to the highest data rate possible on the wireless section of your network.
The tested download speed is the end to end measurement,of which the wireless section is the highest possible data rate.
The measured download speed would be probably no more than 1/2 of the 54mbps.
The important thing to know and measure is what bandwidth you are paying for and do your download speed tests show that you are consistently getting pretty close to that number.

Yes, the speed from the router is 54 Mbps, but the actual Internet speed is a lot lower.
