Lightbulb Solved: Linksys Wireless Dropping Frequently
Hi Everyone!

I posted on the linksys forums and obviously they don't care about their customers as I haven't gotten any response in days. I hope I posted this in the right spot here, as i'm new and learning my way around

anyway,

I have a WRT54GL router and two other computers connect wirelessly through it. One computer connects wirelessly with a WMP54GS and the other with a WUSB54G.

The computer I use mainly uses the WUSB54G and I've been having connection issues for the past two weeks. The only time it really seems to happen is if i'm uploading something. I run a website and am uploading screenshots often. I can't even upload a youtube video without it disconnecting in the middle of it. It only disconnects for 1 or 2 minutes then reconnects like nothing happened. When this computer disconnects I can run over to the other computer that is connected wirelessly with the WMP54GS and it is also disconnected at the same time. Usually only one of these two computers are on at a time though.

For the past 2 days i've been using the computer with the router on it and haven't been disconnected at all. But that computer is used by the whole household so i don't use it much and would rather save my pictures to my own computer that no one else uses.... But when i can't even upload a Youtube video or a few pictures to Photobucket without it disconnecting it's very annoying... However when i'm playing a game on Pogo.com or something it won't disconnect at all. Seems that uploading is the main issue

The router was bought in Janurary of 2008 and nothing has been changed since, but these problems have only been going on for about 2 weeks.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and no help there. Seems that I also have the latest filmware too. I read somewhere to try switching to Channel 11 (I was on 6) and still no help there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

P.S The Windows XP event viewer shows Error 4202 that the connection was lost, and then approx 45 seconds later 4201 says its connected again.

How much RAM do you have on your computer? That could be an issue.

1.25GB RAM, and it's a Dell Dimension DE051. The connection worked 100% perfectly for a year on the computer before this started happening. The ram was upgraded from 256MB to 1.25GB in December, so RAM can't be an issue, plus when this computer disconnects I run to the other wireless computer and it's also disconnected so for some reason it seems that the router blocks all wireless connections but I can't figure out why if nothing was changed.

Are you saying that the problem you are experiencing is that both wireless connected computers lose their connection to the router, but the ethernet connected computer maintains its connection to the router and maintains internet access?

If so, that sounds a lot like wireless interference or the router's radio is dying.

Correct. Both wireless at the same time.

If i'm just doing normal surfing it's fine for hours on end rather it be pogo.com, MSN, Yahoo, etc etc but if I upload a youtube video it disconnects both wireless for only 45 seconds or so, or if i'm uploading a few images to photobucket, imageshack, etc

Put 192.168.1.1 in the web browser. By default, the username is left blank, and the password is admin. Under the Wireless page, try changing the channel.

I changed from channel 6 to 11 and no difference. I also scanned for nearby connections and one of my neighbors has one on channel 5.

should i try another channel?

Check for a firmware update on the router and check to make sure the wireless adapter has the most recent driver.

Okay I will update my filmware tomorrow as there is an update (which was released over a year ago!)

Firmware 4.30.12
- Resolves issue with saving DHCP settings when using PPTP as Internet connection type.
- Resolves security issues found by Tomaz Bratusa (Team Intell) related to session riding. Adds HTTP session timeout.
- Updated PPTP Internet connection functionality
- Resolves issue with setting management port when https is selected.

I have 4.30.07 so there might be a difference, just wonder why it stopped working after a year? Oh well i'll update you all on how it goes Tuesday afternoon. Thanks for the info!

Have you tried a direct modem connection to rule out a problem with your ISP? It's unlikely that the router suddenly needs a firmware update. If the problem is indeed a router, I'd say it's more likely that it simply failed. If you do a firmware update, make sure you have a wired connection.

Are there any electronic items that could possibly be interfering during this time, such as a cell phone or microwave, RC car, etc?? What about structures near you that could possibly cause interference?

You can check your wireless adapter settings.
Double click on your wireless icon, or get to properties where it says Wireless Network Connection Properties, and has 3 tabs: General, Wireless Networks, and Advanced. It says Connect using: and then lists your wireless adapter. Click Configure. Go to the advanced tab. Make sure your Power Saving Mode is set to CAM (Constantly Awake)

Another thing that comes to mind is that your ISP doesnt like you uploading. They could be blocking or throttling your traffic, its possible but not the type of traffic they generally target unless you are sending enormous amounts of data. Sounds like your not though.

You can also try to upgrade your wireless adapter drivers along with the router. I didnt see that the new firmware has a fix for "randomly disconnecting devices" so the new update will probably not do much for you.

It does indeed sound like your wireless is dying. You might be able to find a hack or something to increase power, etc.. but i would recommend that you just go out and pick up a wireless router at your favorite electronics store.

Here is what I use and recommend:

Netgear WNDR3300
I like it because: Access from inside or outside network, can email www logs and block keyword sites, port forwarding, half-way decent firewall, QOS, LAN, 4 ports + wireless.

good luck.
Eric.

The mystery has been solved!

It actually WAS NOT the router itself, it was the USB wireless dying and then dropping all the wireless signals here. So I replaced the USB one with another WMP54GS and problem solved - Faster than before!

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll be back if I have any other troubles lol
