 | Member with 56 posts. | | | | Laptop wireless connection fails I've got a Lenovo 3000 C100 laptop here, and I'm having tons of trouble with the Internet connection. I use XP Pro and the Access Connections program that comes with it. My laptop shut itself down because it was overheating (not the problem), so I turned it back on. The Access Connections thing says it's connected, but I can't go online. I've also lost the Windows wireless widget (you know, the one with the two LCD screens flashing in blue), and I can't turn on the services. I've tried reinstalling Access Connections, but nothing's happened. This happened before, but after I rebooted a few times, it works. Now, I can't do anything online, and I'm using an Ubuntu Live CD for now. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, and check your wireless connection to see if it is connected. If it says 'Disabled' or 'Not connected', right-click on it and:
1) Enable the connection, and/or
2) View available wireless networks, and connect to your home network (with the appropriate password/encryption key). | | Member with 56 posts. | | | | Already did that, like I said, it says it's connected. It used to be that I could see the little widget in the corner, but now I can't. The laptop can also send out packets, but can't receive them. | | Distinguished Member with 2,089 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Sydney, Australia Experience: Fix it until it's broken | | Sorry, didn't read that part...
Well, getting the tray icon back is easy enough:
Go back into your network connections, right-click on your wireless, and select 'Properties'. On the window that pops up, check to make sure that the 'Show icon in notification area when connected' and 'Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity' check boxes are ticked.
As for your connection problem, is your computer running a firewall? Which one? | | Member with 56 posts. | | | | Definitely no firewall problem, because it worked last week and I didn't do anything to it. It's like some sort of luck thing, where I have to pray that the wifi will work after 20 reboots.
New problem, I can't see my wireless connection in XP. I can only see dial-up... which is weird. | | Distinguished Member with 2,089 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Sydney, Australia Experience: Fix it until it's broken | | Well, this is quickly getting out of my depth...
You might get a better response in the Internet & Networking forums. Click the 'Report' button at the bottom of your post, and ask to have it moved.
This definitely needs more specialist attention. | | Moderator with 96,701 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: South Eastern PA, USA Experience: Advanced age & experience | | Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc
Please respond to all the following steps. - Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
- Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
- Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
Let's see this as well.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

1. The three devices listed are:
1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 802.11 Multiband Network Adapter
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
2. Nope, they are all enabled and there are no problems shown.
3. Also none.
I typed ipconfig /ALL and this is all I got.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
