Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Inter faces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Still no good. I'm really sorry for troubling you guys with this problem, and I thank you very much for taking the time to reply to this thread. I really don't know what's the problem with this machine. I mean it was working perfectly and it suddenly stopped letting me go online.

Well, I won't lose hope. If there are anymore solutions keep them coming! Thank you all very much.

Oh and Steve510, diagnose and repair was the first step I tried as soon as I lost internet access.

Did you try uninstalling the NIC as you considered previously? If not, that's probably something that's worthwhile to try.

Ok, I tried uninstalling. It would say that it is uninstalling the device, but immediately close when it starts uninstalling. In other words, it didn't uninstall the device.

There is an option when I try to uninstall the device which says: "Delete the driver software for this device" should I put a check on that? I'm not really sure what exactly that would do.

Also, when I booted to Safe Mode to see if I could uninstall it from there (Still no luck), I found that there were other drivers under Networking when I looked into the Device Manager.... Like ones that aren't even visible when I'm in Normal Mode. What could that be?

Still no luck, unfortunately.

This issue sounds much like mine, in thread "W2K PC won't properly load web pages on new router". Is the PC that is not working the one that you cloned the MAC address from, into your router on set-up? Is it possible that this is the issue? That the two devices sharing the same MAC address is causing a problem?

when u say "direct connection doesnt work" do u mean limited connectivity or ur computer cant even connect and get a ping from the router...well if its limited connectivity...u can try a static ip so u can manually establish a connection to ur router instead of the router trying to automatically give u one. (this is how i solved my problem for some of my computers) in order to make a static ip...ull have to know the DNS(domain name server). and the default gateway(ur routers IP adress)... from there i can help u make a static IP

Well, when I check the access it says "Limited Connectivity". But I once tried to get a ping, it failed. If I try to access the internet, it says I'm not even connected. So I don't know what to think.

Another thing I noticed when I'm in the Network and Sharing Center it keeps on "refreshing" (Every now and then) I suppose it's finding another network or something...

I'm not sure if these are right, but Linksys always uses: 192.168.1.1

And Comcast's DNS is either (I'm in Florida, by the way):
68.87.66.196 Comcast (national) Primary DNS Server.
(or)
68.87.64.196 Comcast Secondary DNS Server.

Also, if you mean trying to input a new IP address (Local Area Connection Status --> Local Area Connection Properties --> Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties) instead of Obtaining one automatically then.. Unfortunately, I have already tried it and no luck. But if you had another method in mind and I was wrong then let me know. I'll do anything to get this to work again.

Thanks again to everyone that have been helping me so far.

Oh, and Big Don, I didn't really do any of that... I can't even connect to the internet at all.

hmm ill have to think about this then...but for ur other question about how to find out ur network card. GO to RUN in the start menu, type in msinfo32, and itll show up a sys. info. go down to COmponents>Network>Adapter(also shows u winsock and protocol) basicaly msinfo32 shows u ur whole comp. but back to the connection thing, try resetting modem and router by unplugging power(im guessing u did a reboot from the router config) and leave it for a min and try again

Ok, here's the odd thing about it... When I unplug the power I'm still receiving a Limited connectivity and the attention symbol is still on the tiny computer screens on the Notification area. The only way to actually make it see that it's disconnected is if I take off the ethernet cable from the computer.

1. Did it work?
2. maybe its because the router has some power left in it b4 it really turns off, might need a sec or 2 b4 it drains the power, but prob not the case
3. hers ur solution, get a wireless adapter for ur PC and use the wireless connection. lol xD

I believe I have found my solution!
Here's what I did. I went to my Device manager. To Network Adapters and clicked on properties... Then I changed my Speed and duplex settings to 10 Mbps Half Duplex. And problem solved!!!
Thanks to everyone who contributed! I really appreciate it. And this thread can now be marked as Solved!

You have driver issues or some hardware issues if you have to run half-duplex. That will also affect your overall throughput. For file sharing, it'll REALLY be painfully show!

Well, it looks like it's running well. And at least I can access the internet. If it's too slow then I'll see if I have to increase it a bit. :\

But I'm hoping that works.

Well, at least your user name (s1owcomputer) is correct for this connection!
