Wireless works, Direct connection doesn't. (For one computer only)
My computer's operating system is a Windows Vista. Here's the main problem, my main computer (desktop computer) AND ONLY THAT ONE is the computer that cannot connect to the internet. And it is not wireless so I have to make a direct connection, yet it still doesn't work. When I make a direct connection with my laptop it works perfectly.

I'm not sure if this is it, but this person had a similar person. I am uncertain if it was exactly this problem: http://forums.techguy.org/networking...ok-direct.html
**(Please pay attention to the links I'm providing. They may be helpful in some way.)
It was working perfectly yesterday, and when I returned a few minutes later it had an attention sign near the little computer screens on my Notification Area: (http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3360/46083525.jpg)
First place I checked was the Network and Sharing Center: (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2182/24275532.jpg) It pretty much gave me a similar picture to what the notification area's computer screens had told me. It requires attention? What exactly did that mean? By the way, my internet provider is comcast, I had given them a call and they mentioned that it may be something with my router. I called my router's company and they just said that it was probably an internet/network card.. I don't remember which. But buying a new internet/network card and opening up the computer is my last resort, i want to atleast try to troubleshooting before assuming the worse.

I have heard that if I uninstall the only network adapter from the device manager and let it reinstall may help (http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/280/54433237.jpg) but I'd rather not do anything before I'm prompted to do so. Though, it says that the device is working properly, so I really don't know what to think. (http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/9989/11482331.jpg)

Please help!!

Have you got another Cat5 cable (the network patch cord) to connect your PC to the router? It may have a flaky connection on one (or more) of the contacts.

And when you plug that cable in do the both lights on the network card light up. Usually these cards have two lights, one that says it sees the connection and the other flashes to indicate traffic moving through the port

I'm sorry if I sound very silly, but the Cat 5 Cable is an ethernet cable? If so, yes. I have another. But I don't really think that's the problem.. I'll try when I get home, though. Though, I'm not sure if I mentioned this but when I plugged the ethernet cable directly to the laptop it worked. The only problem seems to be my main computer.

And I want to ask, how would I be able to see the network card? I'm really not too experienced, especially if I have to open up the computer to do so. x__x;

the 169... address in the first post means the computer cannot see the dns in the router via the wired connection.

yes. ethernet cables are rated as category 5 or 6 usually.

the network card has the port on the back of the system case where you plug the ethernet cable in. when they are working, there are usually a led on each side of the port that should light up when you plug the new cable from the router to your desktop. there should be no need to open the case unless the card doesn't work. if the leds light up, next step is reset the ip address. open the network and sharing center and make sure network discovery is on. it should self resolve if it can see the router. might also try a different router port or just unplug and replug your ethernet cable.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>netsh winsock reset catalog
Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reseting Echo Request, failed.
Access is denied.
Reseting Interface, OK!
A reboot is required to complete this action.

C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reseting Echo Request, failed.
Access is denied.
There's no user specified settings to be reset.

C:\Windows\system32>

Well, I tried that resetting option, it didn't work. I tried it a second time and this is what it gave me. I checked the back of my computer and if you mean the area the Ethernet cable is connected then yes it does light up. But for some reason my computer can't seem to find a connection. I went to the Network and Sharing Center and the Network Discovery is on. :\ I really don't know what else to do. Please help.

Oh, and I tried using another ethernet cable, still didn't work. And remember this is only happening with one computer (my main desktop computer), if connect it directly with the laptop it works.

Unfortunately, I did as he said. I right clicked on the Command Prompt and ran as administrator. If I didn't it would have said
C:\Windows\Rosana instead of system32...

It says right there that they are sending but I'm not receiving. Could something be preventing me from receiving? Or is something disabled?

The 169.254.x.x IP address says you really aren't connected properly, that's why you can't receive.

Did you remove all the wireless network profiles and search for a new network and connect using the proper encryption key?

If you mean resetting the router and try to input a new IPv4/6 address instead of obtaining one automatically, then yes I have. (I received a new address from the actual linksys router support through the phone. But it still did not work. So I changed it back to Obtain an IPv4/6 address automatically once again.)

If not, please tell me what exactly I should do. Should I uninstall (http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/280/54433237.jpg)? If that's what you mean when removing all wireless network profiles? And like I said, it's only the main computer (desktop) and it's not wireless, it's directly connected. So even if I connect it directly to the modem I'm still not able to access and I continue to get this "Not Connected" status. (The attention sign near the little computer screens on my Notification Area).

Sorry, got wired and wireless threads mixed up. For your issue, I'd start by changing the cable and the port on the router. Are other computers connecting to the same router using a wired connection without issues?

Ok, I have already changed the cables more than once already.

I have also mentioned that i have tried connecting it directly with my laptop and they still work. The only problem is my main desktop computer that won't even find a network connection. :\ And as for wireless, yes. The other computers do work.
