Primary DNS Problem.
Basically, I can connect only to local area on my computer. My computer is connected with LAN using a cable. The message I get from windows repair (for vista) is:

Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(64.71.255.198)

Network diagnostics Pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.

My internet comes back every while. It comes for like 12-36 hours, then it goes back to local only for quite awhile, then it goes back to Internet and Local.

I've tried many things, some things got my internet back for a while, or was just a coincidence.

My computer has worked in the previous months I have had it, only getting this problem recently. My router is a linksys (WRT54G ) and the rest of the computers (approx 4 wired) work.

Here are some info. you might need to help me. (I'll get the ipconfig/all information to the computer i'm posting on)

IPv4 Adress: 192.168.1.103 (preferred)
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 64.71.255.198

A topic that I noticed was somewhat similar (different numbers, and probably a different route problem) is:

http://forums.techguy.org/networking...imary-dns.html

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll do the best to supply the necessary information you need. Thanks.

Enable DHCP and see if you have better luck.

Configure DHCP for Windows Vista.
  1. Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click on Network and Internet. (Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.)
  3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click on Manage network connections.
  5. Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  7. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  8. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  9. Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
  10. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  11. Click Close to close the Network Connections window.
  12. Click Close to close the Control Panel window.
  13. Restart your computer.

If you're still having issues, try this stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thanks for the response.

I have tried changing the IP / DNS in the IPv4 many times, switching between automatic, and manual, but still no success .

As for the stack repair options, Command prompt said that 'reset' is not a vaild external / internal command. So, I wasn't able to try this one out.

I just got more information to help you out though. Recently, when I went to diagnose/repair the connection, instead of giving the usual "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(64.71.255.198)

Network diagnostics Pinged the remote host but did not receive a response."

I got a message that said:

Windows confirmed that "Primary DNS Server" is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time.

This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between the two computers and is blocking "domain". Windows has confirmed that Windows Firewall on this computer is correctly configured to allow this connection. However, a remote firewall might be blocking your connection.

The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow Windows to connect.

Policy provider: Windows Firewall
Filter Name: Query User

If the policy provider identified is Windows Firewall, click for more information aboutadjusting Windows Firewall settings. If a different policy provider has been identified, check the provider's documentation on howto adjust the policy settings.

I don't know too much about computers, but i started messing around in the 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security', and turned off the domain, private, and public firewalls. Also, I turned off the firewall for my linksys router, but none of this helped.

So as a summary, I believe my internet is being blocked by a firewall (not on my computer), or I am just having problems receiving information from my primary DNS.

As a side note: I double clicked on 'Local Area Connections' and it said the packets sent was 460,000, and the received was 2,700,000

Any and all help is appreciated, if anyone has any thoughts on how to fix this problem, I would be thankful.

P.S. Sorry that this post is all over the place.

Follow the instructions for the stack reset EXACTLY and you won't get the error you mentioned.

Hello, sorry I didn't respond, the reason is because I opened up a port, and at the same time my internet turned back on. So I didn't want to post trying to get this problem fixed if my internet currently worked.

Anyways, it was on for a few days, now it is saying Local Only again.

MSN Thinks it may be a remote firewall, just like one of my network diagnostics.

I Tried the commands you told me to do, but this time it still says Reset is not a valid command. As far as I know, I was following your directions accurately.

All help would be appreciated, the only difference in my computer info now, is that the IP Changed to 192.168.1.102 (preffered) compared to 103.

Thanks in advance.

With DHCP disabled, there's no way to see what's going on, since the computer will always think it's connected with a manual address.

Ya, my DHCP is currently on. I must of had it static IPed when I copied the information. I am receiving addresses automatically.

My internet came back on today, but as I type this, I say the picture of the little computer (which shows my connection) change to local only, and back to internet, so the problem will be back soon
