Solved: How do I connect my computer to the internet?
Recently I was conned into reformatting my computer to repair some inexplicable problems, and now my computer cannot connect to the wireless home network to access the internet. My machine is a Compaq Presario SR1750NX with an Asus Amberine M motherboard running Windows XP Home edition. My ISP is AT&T and I have a Netgear WPN111 USB wireless adapter. I have visited both the Compaq and Netgear websites but their drivers and software simply do not solve the problem. Google searches only find pages that are only loosely relevant or else find forum threads for specific scenarios that do not apply to my situation, with either no replies or else replies that only provide vague or expensive solutions. Now I am only able to access the internet via a handheld device. How do I connect my computer back up to the internet like it was before in time by Monday?

If you set up your wireless router' security to use encryption then have you entered the necessary encryption key for the Netgear USB Wireless Adapter?
I suspect you havent.

Well, you're certainly right about that, since my wireless router doesn't appear to have a way for me to set ANYTHING up for it whatsoever.

Okay, so I was finally able to connect to the wireless network, but I still can't connect to the internet, despite having all the necessary information to do so.

Now I can connect to the internet, but I'm not able to connect to the internet long enough to download Windows Service Pack 3. I'm not really sure why it keeps arbitrarily crapping out, but my signal isn't as good as it was before, despite not having been moved.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

There are no error messages. It just refuses to stay connected. Other computers function normally, although this Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop running Windows Vista doesn't read SD cards or USB jump drives properly.

What's a floppy disk? Is that like an 8-track or something?

Did you install your chipset and networking drivers (preferably the latest ones from your PC manufacturer's web site)? And then get the latest driver for your wireless adapter?

Chipset is a new term to me. I already tried downloading drivers from the company websites but they were ineffective.

HP shows these Spring 2006 Original ATI Chipset Drivers for the Compaq Presario SR1750NX.

And they also have Spring 2006 Original Realtek LAN Drivers.

Oh, that's interesting I tried to install those, but my computer acted all picky and said I had to install them from device manager (since when?). So when I tried to do that, I just chose to Update Drivers for any device that had a ? or ! next to it. I guess it worked but now I was lucky enough to get the SP3 update and now I have a ton of other updates to get through.

So, your internet access is now working?

I just noticed your earliler tongue in cheek "What's a floppy disk? Is that like an 8-track or something?" Are you old enough to know that the first floppy disks really were floppy?

And those 8" disks held a massive 241 K-bytes in the original SSSD format. I still have a pair of 8" floppies in a case from an early computer before the IBM-PC days in the basement...

Yeah, I'm old enough to have used 'em. Just kidding around. ^^ Anyways, thanks for all the help, peoples, I wouldn't have even tried without your support. It seems odd that my signal's not as good as it used to be (finicky wireless magic) but I believe I'm now on the stage of seeking out drivers and updates and codecs and all that good stuff that becomes really invisible once you have it.
