Unhappy internet connection problem
The laptop in question is Windows XP home OS.

It is able to connect to the router wirelessly without limited connectivity. There are no problems with the router since two other laptops are able to use the internet. I tried giving static ip's and doing other ipconfig stuff. I even tried connecting through cable and still the same problem.

Heard it is a virus and i've used AVG 8.5 to remove any threats but is still not working.

Ok:Some things to try:Firstly, lets see an ipconfig /all from the failing pc(wireless)
Can you ping the router
Can you ping www.yahoo.com

A failure to ping is generally a firewall issue.

Disable any F/Ws and try again.

Here are some ipconfig and ping tips from Johnwill.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thanks for your reply, hope this is what you need to help me. My DNS and Gateway have the same address - like my other functioning laptops. Should I use the ones that are stored on my router?

Tried that and didnt help

I looked at DHCP client list on my router and it had this:

192.168.2.3 - Furybringerx
192.168.2.2 - Jude-PC
192.168.2.4 - lucylaptop
192.168.2.5 - GJames-Laptop
192.168.2.6 - platformone
192.168.2.7 - platformone

A laptop with two IP's isn't normal right? Might it be because I once connected via cable and wireless at the same time?

That (your last question) is exactly right. The IP address is really for the adapter, not "the computer" as we often say.

Check that the DNS client service is Started (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services).

In case of corrupted drivers use Device Manager to uninstall the wireless adapter; reboot and let Windows find the adapter and reinstall the driver.

I uninstalled the network adaptors (wireless and ethernet) but one. It is called Symantec Network Security Miniport #3 and when I try to uninstall I get a dialog box saying:

"Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up this computer"

Managed to remove but still no internet

Good chance that Norton is the problem. If uninstalling Norton and running the Norton Removal tool doesn't get rid of everything, reboot and run the Removal tool again. Then contact Symantic if there are still remnants of Symantic/Norton.

After uninstalling Norton and using the removal tool, run the stack repair I posted previously.
