Burjo G'day all,

My system is a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Desktop.
I'm running Duel Boot with Vista and XP Pro SP3.
I have only just Installed the XP the other day.

The Family has a Desktop Connected ADSL with a 2WIRE Gateway 2701HGV-W that is working fine.

THE ISSUE:
I Simply Can't get it to Connect on my XP Partition.. I Got it working Perfectly in Vista.

In XP
Using the Bigpond install CD provided it wont complete. and states i need to connect via cables not wireless.
With the XP Wizard it wont let me set up manually. it said (Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, the Wireless network setup might not work. For details, see article 871122 in the microsoft knowledge base on microsoft.com).

I have a Red PC Icon on the bottom right saying netgear is disconnected

For the ethernet are you using the same cable and router LAN port that you use with the Vista? The "Media disconnected" means that no cable is detected.

For the wireless are you using the Netgear utility or XP's Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) to manage the connection? You have to make sure the other one is not running.

The Ethernet is not connected.
The Wireless is my issue.
i Couldn't get the Netgear to Complete the Installation so i wanted to used the WZC to config, and manage. but i couldn't complete the install with that either. i got message.

How do i check which one is the manager.

Throw the CD you're trying to install with away! You do NOT need it to connect to a wireless network, and it can only cause you grief!


You appear to have a valid connection on the wireless interface in that IPCONFIG. Let's expand your diagnostics and see if we can see what's really wrong.


Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output!

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The good connection is for Vista. The failed wireless is in the first ipconfig, for the new dual booted XP.

The CD John wants you to throw away is for the router. The CD with the adapter contains the Netgear utility and driver, which are useful. Better is to get the latest utility/driver from Netgear's web site.

Anyhow, uninstall anything Netgear that did make it onto your computer and start over, preferably with the latest download from Netgear's web site.

Hello again..

The CD is gone.. i Un-installed all netgear drives ect. downloaded the lates driver only and installed it.
The connection is sort of going...it's now intermittent. every 1-2 seconds is connecting then unconnecting.

i did 2 new ipconfig. once it was connected the other it wasn't.

When you use a static IP configuration the only way to determine whether the adapter and router are communicating is with the ping; and the ping says "no." But the "hardware error" messages and the "Media Disconnected" makes me think that there is a hardware error (or possibly a driver problem).

Does the router ever assign an IP configuration when you use dynamic addressing?

Set the wireless TCP/IP Properties to 'obtain IP auto' and 'obtain DNS auto.' "OK" your way back at least to Network Connections, try to connect, and take a look at (or post) your ipconfig /all.

I Checked 'Obtain Dns and IP Auto' and also made sure that Windows is managing the connection.
Now I Have Connection and Not Dropping Out.
