I'm still waiting for confirmation that you have "executed" post # 3 in the order given ...

a. uninstalled Norton;
b. successfully run Symantec's Norton Removal Tool;
c. performed the stack/WINSOCK repairs.

These procedures do not fix 100% of the problems with the symptoms you have, but they take care of well over half so it seems fruitless to proceed until this low hanging fruit has been harvested.

I will try this. Also, how do you know that the norton removal tool worked. Does it pop a window up? Last time I ran it, all I got was a quick flash of cmd and then it would say "already running"

That doesn't sound good. I'd reboot and try again.

I only ran the tool once, over a year ago, and don't remember exactly what it said. But I know I didn't get any error indication.

It actually gives you some prompts to make sure you really want to run it. A quick disappearing act is a problem.

Uninstalled Norton, ran Removal tool, fixed tcp/ip and winsock. Rebooted.
All ran smoothly.

SAME ERROR AS BEFORE

On the Vista computer:

I have enabled file sharing and network discovery on the Vista computer. In the Network window, it shows the Vista computer and the router, but not the XP computer. When I click "View full map" in the Network and Sharing Center, the XP computer shows up but I can't click on it. When I type run: \\[XP Computer's Name], I get an error that says "Windows cannot access \\[XP Computer's Name] (error code: 0x80070043: the network name cannot be found). When I click "Diagnose" i get an error message that reads ""[XP Computer's Name]" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer."

Sucks, doesn't it.

Can you ping both ways BY COMPUTER NAME, and IP address? If not, we have to solve that first.

If the pings work, please post the following from each of the computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Well, all of that looks like they should connect.

The only thing is to actually check if you have correctly configured file sharing, check the properties of a shared resource and see if you actually have sharing enabled.

I'd also try booting in Safe Mode with Networking for both machines and see if that changes the symptoms.

I really doubt that LLTD is going to fix this one.

I doubt that ipv6 is causing this problem, but since it sometimes is trouble and is not needed banish it from the XP:

Start - Run - ipv6 uninstall - OK

Also on the XP try this:

Possible Fix for corruption “Access Denied” Problem:

Using notepad create a file named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- cut after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- cut before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Restart and see if this helps with the access issue.

We've checked and accounted for firewall, services, ipv6 and "restrictanonymous" on the XP. I know from personal experience that it is possible to get corruption on an XP that we do not know how to fix short of a Windows installation. That's my guess at this point.

Two other things to consider/try. Non-Windows firewalls or security suites can result in quite amazing errors, so there is a slight chance of such a problem with one on the Vista.

I found somewhere (lost the source years ago) one other "corruption fix" that worked for a few people ...

Another: (XP Pro w/SFS, and probably Win2k Pro)

Start Menu --> Control Panel
Double-Click Administrative Tools
Double-Click Local Security Policy
Click "User Rights Assignment" on the left panel
Look for the top entry on the right panel listed "Access this computer from the Network"
Right-Click --> Properties
Click "Add User or Group"
Click "Advanced" --> Find Now
Select and press ok to add a User or Group. Add all of the following:

Administrator
Guest
Everyone
NETWORK

Press OK two more times and you're done.
