Angry Vista <--> XP Network Problem
Problem:
I am trying to get a network so I can share and access files between two computers. One runs Vista Ultimate x64, SP1 and the other runs XP Pro, SP2.

On the XP computer:
I can acess the Vista computer under My Network Places. There is an icon that says [Vista Computer's Name] and I click on it and get the Public and Users folders of the Vista computer. That works fine.

On the Vista computer:

I have enabled file sharing and network discovery on the Vista computer. In the Network window, it shows the Vista computer and the router, but not the XP computer. When I click "View full map" in the Network and Sharing Center, the XP computer shows up but I can't click on it. When I type run: \\[XP Computer's Name], I get an error that says "Windows cannot access \\[XP Computer's Name] (error code: 0x80070043: the network name cannot be found). When I click "Diagnose" i get an error message that reads ""[XP Computer's Name]" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer."

Router:
They are both plugged in to a D-Link DGL-4500 and share the internet connection perfectly.

Antivirus/Firewall info:
The XP computer has Norton Internet Security 2008, the Vista computer has no antivirus or firewall software. On the XP computer I have set the network setting in the network map to "Full Trust" for the Vista computer. I have also added a firewall exception to allow any traffic, in or out, any port, any protocol, to/from the local IP of the Vista computer.

Please Help.

Hi Zigatron,

Try to disable firewalls and enable the guest account in your XP box, reboot both boxes and test again.

NIC 2008 sounds like trouble. Try uninstalling it and then running the Norton Removal Tool.

Next, run this stack repair to fix anything that the Norton uninstall broke.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Try it again and tell us the exact symptoms.

Can I uninstall Norton? Won't that make my computer open to viruses?

Simply don't invite any viruses into your computer while you are running w/o an anti-virus. Disconnect the router from the modem to make absolutely sure if you desire.

After you determine whether NIS is, or is not, (part of) the problem you can reinstall it and properly configure it for the desired access. At the beginning at that link above are instructions for making sure you have the information you need to reinstall NIS.

Exact same problem as before. I can't access shared files on the XP machine from the Vista machine.

In the "full network map" (on the Vista machine) I can mouse over the Vista computer, the router, and the internet connection and get a little hand pointer. when I mouse over the XP machine's icon, nothing happens.

On the Vista machine, When I type run: \\[XP Computer's Name], I get an error that says "Windows cannot access \\[XP Computer's Name] (error code: 0x80070043: the network name cannot be found). When I click "Diagnose" i get an error message that reads ""[XP Computer's Name]" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer."

I'm not sure if the Norton Removal Tool worked. When I ran it an "extracting" box came up and nothing else happened. when I tried to run it again, it said "already running."

Question: If it worked normally, how would I access the files stored on the XP machine from the vista machine?

well, first thing I'd check is if either of them can ping each other.

if they both can, it's just a setting somewhere.

if neither can it's something a bit deeper.

but I would start with the simple stuff first.

Start - Network - double click the XP computer's icon - double click the desired shared folder - continue as normal in a Windows Explorer window.

You did enable file and printer sharing on the XP, right?

Yes I think file and printer sharing is enabled, but I want to be sure. How do I check this?

They can both ping each other just fine.

I'm not sure the Norton Removal Tool worked. When I launched it after uninstalling Norton, the only window that came up was an "extracting" message. When I re-installed Norton, it was already configured and I did not have to enter my serial or set anything else up.

On the XP in Network Connections right click on your connection - Properties- at least the following should have check marks:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you are using Windows XP firewall "file and printer sharing" should be one of the Exceptions.

So, from the Vista you can now ping the XP by IP address, right? Can you ping it by name? Does it appear in Start - Network? Can you access it's shared folders now?

I have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks enabled on the XP.

From the Vista computer, I can ping the XP by name or IP address.

The XP still doesn't show up under Network, I cannot access the files, and it won't connect when I type run: \\<xp computer name/IP>.

When I type run I still get the File Sharing (SMB) error.

Could it be a problem with the workgroup?

For \\computer name or \\IPaddress the workgroup shouldn't matter. But you still want it the same (XP defaults to MSHOME and Vista defaults to WORKGROUP).

Make sure the following services are Started on the XP (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services).

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Workstation

all the services were already started on the XP.

I checked them.

Still get the SMB error.
