I sense a disturbance in my wireless network configuration...
Hi there,

First time poster here. I've run into an issue with my wireless network settings, and I don't know what to do. When I access the Network Connections section of my Control Panel, I can see my wireless connection, but I am unable to right-click and select "Status". As I understand, that should give me some information about the condition of the connection, but it simply doesn't do anything. Furthermore, the Wireless Connection icon in my system tray has disappeared. I assume there is a connection between those two issues, but I don't know for sure.

This came to bear today when I attempted to install a second wireless adapter (a Netgear Rangemax USB adapter), which failed to access the internet through my router. There may be another issue at play there, but until I'm confident of my computer's internal networking configuration, I'm having trouble placing the blame elsewhere.

My computer is using a D-Link wireless-G network card; I seem to recall tweaking my system a while back to work around a recurring error box, but I can't remember many details there. Maybe that's of some help?

Thanks so much, if anyone out there knows how to fix this, I'd be very grateful.

I'm not on my XP machine right now so bare with me...

It sounds like you're using the software that came with the card and not wireless zero.

So try this : http://support.microsoft.com/default...2&Product=winx

Just as an aside...I never use the vendor provided software...never jives well for me...

good luck...and may the force be with you

Thanks for responding, ckphilli. I took a look at the article you directed me to.

See, this is the weird thing: the network connection is absolutely already set up for Windows to do the configuring. When I installed my second adapter today, the adapter software preempted even the most basic functions, like searching for wireless networks. That's not the case here. The checkbox mentioned in the article ("Use windows to configure my wireless network settings") is already checked, and the Wireless Zero Configuration service is already up and running.

There's something else at play here; I'm wondering if the background process that governs the wireless connectivity monitor is corrupt or something?

Thanks again,

Andrew

Let me back up for a sec here...are you using the DLINK and Netgear at the same time? If so, turn off your computer, take out the dlink and plug the netgear in. Restart, see how it works

If you aren't using both at the same time...try this:

Uninstall all dlink and netgear related programs
Install the driver only for the netgear
see what happens

Hope it works for you-

Hi,

I actually ended up returning the Netgear adapter when it failed to function; do you think that if I were to uninstall both adapters and reinstall the D-Link program it might do the same thing?

Yes, but only install the driver...let Windows do the rest.
