Vista PC does not show up in workgroup and is restricting access
Ok, so heres how it goes: My network is One wired gateway fx7020. A wireless desktop, and an imac.

The wireless desktop runs windows xp, wired gateway runs vista home premium and imac of course leopard.

So the issue goes, I have a perfect network all together, except when it come to my vista pc. My Imac sees my Xp computer and vice versa, they can share files etc. My workgroup is labeled WORKGROUp. They are both in it and so is the wired gateway. BUT, the gateway with vista does not show up to either computer and does not show up in the workgroup. ALTHOUGH when I search its IP adress from the xp computer I can find the computer, I double click to access it and recieve this message:

\\10.0.1.2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: User account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.

What does this mean?? IS this why it isnt displaying in my workgroup. Someone help I need to share files and printers.
Oh and the other part, The widows xp or mac computer do not show in my network place at all, and are not even discovered and I have everything enabled. Although the funny and weird thing is when I type their ip adresses into my computer I can find them and there files and access them.

Please help

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

I have done all of this and made sure of everything. The pings come back as 4 packets sent and 4 packets received. Lost = 0 All computers are in the same workgroup and have all services turned on. I feel that it is just my vista computer not cooperating because every other computer works fine. What do I do??

The reinstall could be an issue, but I can't say exactly how.

What are your settings in Network and Sharing Center?

If you have Password Sharing ON I suggest you try with it OFF until you get successful access.

Probably be good to shut down all computers and unplug the router. Plug in the router and then boot the computers, to give everything a fresh start.

Settings in network and sharing center are as followed:

Network Discovery- On
File sharing- On
Public folder sharing-On
Printer Sharing-On
Password Protected Sharing-Off
Media Sharing- On

Devices shown are only my computer which is a gateway FX7020.
I have shut down all of the computers and unplugged the router, still no luck at all.

With the imac NOT on the network, please show the following for the two PCs. It's important to not have the imac on the network because one of the things we want to check for is that there is exactly one master browser, and I don't know how to handle imac for that determination.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following commands:

nbtstat -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

That error is one of the issues, that's for sure!

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Did NETBIOS get fixed by the stack repair?

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

All of these services are currently running and I still get the message: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]

C:\Users\Eddy Smith>nbtstat -n
Failed to access NetBT driver -- NetBT may not be loaded

I have done some research, could this be because I have to enable the administrator account, even though the account I am logged onto has administrator privileges?

I've never had to do that on any Vista machine, so that seems unlikely.

Did you simply try enabling NETBIOS?

Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP for 2K/XP
  1. Right click the network properties for the connection in question.
  2. Select Properties
  3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
  4. Select Properties
  5. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
    • Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties
    • Click Advanced
    • Select the WINS Tab Above
    • Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
  6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.
