Question Wireless Connected But No Internet/Data Flow
I have had a MSI Wind U100 for a while now and have been plagued by a number of wireless problems... but the latest one has me baffled. Usually they can be solved by a driver update or flashing the bios. This time, I have full connectivity but no data can be transferred. I have tried repairing, refreshing the dns cache etc. I went into ipconfig and can see an ip address for myself, but I can't ping the router, or anything else for that matter. Any Ideas?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

ISP: Shaw Cable
Router/Modem: Unknown, I'm renting and the modem is upstairs...
its TRENDnet though.
Wireless Connection
No ecryption
Windows XP Pro SP3 Used
IE and Firefox both used

No text errors, the windows utility that connects to the internet states that the computer is connected, but when I open IE/Firefox, I get "Page Cannot be Displayed"

I haven't tried a direct connection to the router, as I said, its unavailable so thats not an option right now.

No other computers are exhibiting any similar symptoms

Can you ping the router at 192.168.1.1?

If so, maybe the router has died or it's not actually connected to the ISP. Do any other machines using this network connect properly? Can you connect this machine with a wired connection? If that fails, try the wired connection booted in Safe Mode with Networking.

I notice a VPN, those can sometimes kill your connections, you may have to uninstall any VPN clients.

If all else fails, give this stack reset a try.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

I can't ping the router

Other computers use the same router with no problems, and the MSI Wind can't use any other router either.

I've tried a little USB Dongle to try to connect with the same result... says I'm connected but no Internet.

The stack reset didn't help.

Any sure fixes/ other ideas I can try?

You have two computers that can't connect. I have to believe that the router is blocking you for some reason. The fact that you get the 192.168.1.100 address suggests to me that you're the only wireless connection, or at least the first. I think you need to fix the router here.

The MSI Wind may have a totally different issue if it can't connect anywhere.

I didn't notice a response to John's

If you've taken care of that uninstall any non-Windows firewall or security suite. If Norton or McAfee use the respective Removal Tool.

Sorry, I can indeed ping the router, I forgot the two zeros.

The other two computers using this router both have perfect internet. And the Wind can't connect anywhere else either.

I have uninstalled my bitdefender firewall... but how do I uninstall the VPN client, as far as I know... I just used the windows utility to create it.

Did you try this in Safe Mode with Networking as I requested previously? Can you ping 192.168.1.1 in that mode?
