Angry HELP! Can't get a new IP Address!!!
Hi everyone,

I'm new to this so bear with me. I have an Emachines W3644 desktop running windows xp version 5.1.2600. For my internet connections, I use a Belkin wireless usb adapter that gets a signal from the belkin 802.11g router that's downstairs (i.e. i can't do a wired connection or move my computer downstairs). 2 days ago, the internet was running extremely slow even after resetting the router and modem so I used the ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew like I have done in the past and it stopped working after I released the IP address...so now I don't have one and I can't figure out how to get one without messing up the entire network in my house. This is what my cmd screen looks like now:

Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1.2600

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig/all

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 4 while it has its media disconnected.

I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. PLEASE HELP!!!

Also...If I use the system restore disc that comes with the computer, will that give me an IP address? I'm willing to erase everything on my computer to do it.

Since you do not expect to use the ethernet (LAN) any time soon you could go into Network Connections - right click on the ethernet connection - Disable. That's not going to fix any problem, but will make the non-used ethernet disappear from any ipconfig output or error messages. Just remember to Enable it again when/if you want to use it.

Reboot your PC and try again to connect to your wireless network. If unsuccessful please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I disabled the ethernet connection and rebooted the computer with no luck. The message reads:

What utility are you using to manage the wireless connections--XP's WZC, Belkin's, or some other one?

Do you detect your network? If so, exactly what happens when you tell it to connect?

I'm using Belkins 802.11g Wireless router that's hooked up to the computer on the main floor and a Belkin's usb wirless adapter in my room. When I turn the computer on, I can see that the network is there and I connect to it, the belkin icon and the network connection icon in the system tray say they are connected. All of a sudden, the icons go dead. I tried the repair button for the network connection and it says "limited or no connectivity" and "ip address cannot be found. I even looked for the IP address in network connections and it comes up as all zeroes.

(from a JohnWill post)

IP addresses of 0.0.0.0 are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
1. DHCP Service not running.
2. Duplicate IP address on the network.
3. Bad NIC card drivers.
4. Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
1. Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
2. Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, reboot the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
3. Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
4. Replace the Network Interface Card.
