Unhappy Solved: My IP won't change from 169
I have tried loads of diffrent things, even changed the port my LAN card is in, that just stopped my computer from booting up (same happens if i put my 1GB of RAM in too).

What can I do? I have a eMachines, they dont give you the recovery disk so I can't 'reset' XP

If there is a way to reset XP I would like to do that. If not, a soulution to my IP problem would be grand =D

Thanks!

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

I'd then like to see this with a wired connection to your router/modem.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Go to start, network connections, and right click on local Area Connection, and go to properties. Highlight TCP/IP and click properties. Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is checked, and the Obtain DNS server Address automatically is check.

As far as your windows problem, does your computer have the license sticker for XP on it? If it does that mean that you legally both a license for the version of Windows on that sticker. First go to the eMachines website and see if they have the drivers for your model there, download and burn to a CD. Also, if they have support line call them and see if you can get a recovery CD, if they don't help you can contact Microsoft, tell them you have license but not a cd and give them the Licnese. They may charge you for sending a CD out.

Since he's getting a 169.254.x.x address, one can assume that DHCP is probably enabled.

no chipset driver is just that... your chipset driver. (driver for the chipset on your motherboard)

What is the series and model number of your pc?

its a emachines E4076

I have found an XP reboot disk, I am reinstalling XP

I am not to fond of my computer, so I am not to bothered about doing a full restart. It is in the process of restarting now.

Also know where to download all my drivers once this is done.

I will let you know if this fixes my IP problem

(I have a feeling that my IP problem is due to my messing with rededt32 to try speed up my computer)

Thanks for every bodys help so far though =)

Right click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced. In Startup and Recovery, you can configure the delay and default startup system, or just have it immediately start the one of your choice.
