Question Solved: Networking problem
This is related to a previous post, but as I've tried various solutions, the symptoms have changed.

I have a laptop with XP Home (SP3) and a desktop with Vista Home Premium. They can both see each other, but I cannot open the laptop from the desktop. When I try, I get "THINKPADT60 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource" etc., ending with "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

The desktop is wired to the router. I get the same error whether the laptop is wired or connected wirelessly to the router. I can access the desktop from the laptop without any problems.

Things I have tried:
- I have updated everything, including the firmware of the router.
- I have run the network wizards.
- I have the same user names, passwords and workgroups on both machines.
- I ran Windows network diagnostics.
- File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the laptop. Several folders are shared on each machine.
- The problem persists when I disable both firewalls (Norton and McAfee).
- The Vista desktop is set to:
-- Private Network
-- Network discovery On
-- File sharing On
-- Public folder sharing On (I've tried Off also)
-- Printer sharing On
-- Password protected sharing Off (I've tried On also)
-- Media sharing Off
- If I try to access the laptop by typing \\Thinkpadt60\SharedFolderName, I get "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

Any suggestions???

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.
