Solved: Router problem
Problem: I can't access my website from the internet after I install a wireless router.

Situation:
I have a website running on my pc that I can access externally through my DSL modem. When I put a new Linksys WRT110 wireless router inline I can no longer access the website.

Using the router's options, I have assigned a static IP address to the server and verified the IP address at the server.

Using the router's options I have forwarded port 80 to the static IP address above.

I have disabled the firewall in the router in case it is causing the problem.

The DSL modem is set to "share" it's external IP address which it does. When the router is inline, it receives the IP address as it's external address. When the router is NOT inline, the server receives the modem's WAN address as it's own IP address.

The router is setup to assign DHCP private IP addresses to the devices on the LAN but the IP address for the server is reserved via it's MAC address.

In IIS the website bindings are set as follows: IP address = "All unassigned". Port = 80. Host Name is blank.

The various reasons I've read include that the ISP may be blocking port 80 incoming...not the case as it works fine without the router.

I have powered everything down, started the DSL modem first, waited, started the router 2nd, waited, started the server last. No help.

I'm rather at a loss as to what else to try at this point. It seems to me the problem has to be in the router somewhere but I sure can't figure out where. I have updated the firmware to the newest available version.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance....
Marty

when your trying to access the website.... do you have it set up with any dns service? Has your ISP gave you a static IP address or are you in a dchp pool for your public IP?

Have you tried to put PC with the website on it in the routers DMZ?

thanks for the reply Kevin.
The website name is registered through Dotster.
ZoneEdit has a tool I use that updates their DNS servers with my ISP assigned dynamic IP address.
I have checked and double checked that the DNS IP address matches my ISP assigned address using ping as well as dnsstuff.com tools.

More info for anyone that cares to run their own tests...

The website name is martygerman.com
The current ISP assigned IP address is 68.89.1.210 as of 6/16/2009 1:44 p.m. central time.

I tried using the DMZ as Kevin suggested.
I disabled the firewall (I don't leave it disabled, only when testing something). Then I put the IP of the server as the "destination" while leaving the source as "Any IP address".
No Luck.

The address is resolving correctly, so the domain name correctly routes to the proper IP address.

This seems to clearly be a problem with the router's port forwarding.

Here's the port forward page for your router: http://www.portforward.com/english/r...RT110index.htm

Pick the application and/or port you want to forward and follow the tutorial.

Thanks for the suggestions. I figured it out.

It was the Windows firewall blocking HTTP. It didn't make sense to me at first since the website worked without the router but not with it. I think what was happening is that without the router, the server was sharing the WAN IP address of the modem and that seems to have bypassed the Windows firewall. Go figure.

Thanks again!
