Exclamation Can connect direct, but no internet
On my Vista computer with Realtek 8168D/8111 network card (built-in to mobo) I can access my family computer by running a network cable directly from pc to pc, but when I plug my computer in through the router I can't access anything. I suspect it may be because of the presence of the Internet through the router, which I want to access, and my computer has problems getting an IP address or something. I know that the router is set up properly, because I'm using it right now (on family computer) to access this site. I know it's not a problem with the network cable, because I tried using family computer cable (which I know works) but it still doesn't work. Vista says that there is no cable connected in Local Area Connection, even though there is. I have VMware and VirtualBox installed which add their own network adaptors, but they were only installed recently, and this problem has persisted since installing Vista about 2 weeks ago. I am planning on installing the Win7 RC soon if no-one can solve my problem, as I had internet working properly on Win7 Beta. I have the latest drivers for my network card (as of june 15 '09), but Vista has no updates beside SP1 which was on the disk. I read somewhere that SP1 can affect network access, is this true?
Need answer by June 30th, as I am booked into a lanfest on July 4th-5th.
Any help is appreciated.

If you were able to do pc to pc would assume the RealTek is working properly.

In TCP/IP Properties for the RealTek, General tab, is it set to Obtain IP adress and DNS server automatically?

You might try unplug the cable, uninstall the Realtek, reboot the computer and let it rediscover and install the card.

Could also be a firewall issue. Try the connection with your firewall turned off.

From a JohnWill post.
On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Let's see this from the working computer as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The card is set to assign ip address automatically, i have tried uninstalling it several times, I have disabled the firewall already to see if it would work (it didn't), I know that the pc to pc works for sure because i just finished a game of halo against my brother across the LAN.

I hope that's not the working computer.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

just tried everything JohnWill suggested, nothing.
If it helps, the network plug doesn't register a cable has been connected. No lights light up or anything. Windows doesn't see anything. It's like any cable coming from the router (Billion ADSL Modem/Router with 4-port Switch) is dead in the eyes of my computer. My dad is using his laptop right now and its working fine; i swap the cable over to my computer: nothing. 8 days and counting to preparation for lan-fest.

If the NIC doesn't light up with a good cable on a good router port, you need a new NIC most likely.
