Internet Failing Periodicly
Ok so, in my house we have a few computers wired up to a router. We used to have no problems at all but recently the internet will start going really really slow for short periods of time (usually about 5-10 minutes, but sometimes as long as 20 or 30). It never completely disconnects during these times but its as close to disconnected as it could ever be(about 30,000 ping). Resetting the router during this time does nothing, and i've found restarting my computer usually fixes the problem which originally led me to beleive it was a virus or something like that but I ran a scan and it came up with nothing so this may be a coincidence. The router i am using is a linksys WRT54G, it is a few years old. The modem is a Motorola SB5100, also at least a few years old. I attempted to hook my computer directly to the modem and bypass the router but got no connectivity at all. I'm kind of stuck here and if anyone could offer some help I would be very grateful.

Do all of the computers have the problem? If so, it's unlikely to be just your computer.

Turn off the power to the modem.
Connect your computer directly to the modem.
Turn on the modem.
Boot the computer.

You should have a connection, if so I'd like you to run the following tests.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

DSLReports

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

If you still don't have a connection, please do this.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

That's the weird thing. When I try to get a wired connection to my modem directly I get nothing. I've tried resetting the modem and router and rebooting my computer multiple times. No dice.

Well, that test looks fine, so the modem connection is working.

I'd try running the test a few times to see if you can catch a time where the connection is having the problem.
