Hi,
I've got a terribly frustrating problem with my internet. I'll give the basic background first, the system that is having technical problems runs vista 32, and my ethernet cord that runs to it is working properly (i tested it with other computers).
My router is qwest's actiontec GT701WG, i also have another router that's a leviton gateway (which connects my other computers to the internet).
If you need more specs, just let me know.
The problem is this: I've have a connection of 4 computers running through the leviton gateway, which connects to my qwest router, which connects me to the internet. For a few years now, this connection has worked great, no problems like this before. But just today, one of my computers couldn't connect to the internet, or to any of the routers. It's LAN line was receiving a ton of packets, but it says it wasn't sending a single one. My first thought was that it was just a small glitch so i restarted everything. Unplugged all the cords to my routers as well, still nothing. Then i thought the problem was my ethernet adapter, so i tried an ethernet to usb adapter, and that adapter didn't work either. So finally, i plugged this computer through the usb line of the actiontec router, and it still wouldn't connect to the router (i use this usb line for one of my other computers in my house so i know it works).
I don't see how it could be a hardware problem, and i can't imagine what kind of software problem could be going on. the only thing different from today and yesterday (when it was working fine) was that there was a windows update that was installed yesterday. So i did a system restore, and i went into add and remove programs to make sure it was gone, and i was able to delete so i don't think that was the problem.
I'm out of ideas, i really have no idea what's going on. Please help,

Connect the cable to the router and perform the following actions.




TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.



Next, please do this.


Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thanks for the help, i tried the steps, and it didn't work sorry.

Here's the info i was able to gather, except i wasn't able to ping the gateway cause it won't give me a number. The IP address (and lack of gateway) are irregular from what my computer usually shows. Below this information, i posted the ipconfig from another computer of mine so you can see what my regular, working connection looks like.

Since you get a good IP configuration in Safe Mode with Networking my top suspect is a non-Windows firewall or security suite.

see i thought so too, so i tried turning off my firewall for my virus protection (eset smart security) and then i tried turning off windows firewall as well, and that didn't work either. any other ideas?

Uninstall eset smart security. If they have any special cleanup Removal Tool or Uninstall Tool use that also.

k i don't think i'm going to jump to such a conclusion just yet. i've had eset for several years now and it's never done this to me. Also, i have eset on 4 other computers and they all work fine. i also just tried not letting eset load on startup, no process was running from eset and the internet still doesn't work, so i really don't think it's the problem, and i'd rather not uninstall it for no reason if i can avoid it.

welp, i was bored and had some spare time so i uninstalled it, and it worked. So props for the good answer, i really didn't want to reinstall my virus protection but hey it's better than not having internet! so thanks for your help, you guys are lifesavers seriously!

You need to simply pick different virus protection, it shouldn't be blocking your access. FWIW, if you have ESET version 3 with the firewall, I had all sorts of issues with that version! I finally moved to version 4 and it worked much better. I currently run just their AV, I find that software firewalls behind my router are overkill.

I have observed (through threads here) many times that a non-Windows firewall gets corrupted, confused or overly protective and must be uninstalled. That doesn't preclude reinstalling the same thing and having days or weeks or years of good service until the next glitch. As John stated it's always good to go with the latest version, because it probably includes some fixes.

I feel sufficiently protected by my router at home and by the Windows XP and Vista and 7 RC firewalls on public networks.
