Question Solved: Cannot connect to internet with router
Our internet connection recently went out during a storm an when trying to get it working again, I've run into some problems. As of now I am able to run the ethernet wire from the cable modem to the computer and connect to the internet without problems. However, when I try to connect the modem through the router (a D-link DI-254) to the computer, the internet doesn't work. The computer says it's connected but websites will not load at all. I have tried resetting the router and have also went to the http://192.168.0.1 address and ran the setup wizard, but I still can't get it to work. Again, when the router is bypassed, the internet connection works as it should. My main concern is getting the connection wired through the router so the wireless internet as well as the connection on the desktop will function properly.

Also, when the connection is re-routed through the router, the wireless network I established can be found but when I connect a laptop to the network, pages will not load. I have tried everything I can think of, so hopefully someone else has some input.

What modem do you have?
First thing I would suspect is an IP address (subnet) conflict between the modem and router. Both modem and router cannot have the same address.
When you connect to the modem, what IP address does the computer get? If it is 192.168.0.xx, then that is your problem.
Either the modem or router's IP address (subnet) has to be changed to something like 192.169.1.1.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

  • Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
  • Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
  • Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
  • Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
  • Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
  • Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
  • Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com


Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.


If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

You are talking to the router, but the router is apparently not getting a connection.

What's the EXACT make and model of the modem?

Connect directly to the modem (after power cycling the modem), and do the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Correct. We were connected directly from the cable modem to the Zonet connector, and into the USB, thus allowing us to have internet...so those are the results lol.

Well, since that modem has DHCP services and a proper public IP address, my previous reset procedure should work if the cables and router are functional.

Retry the reset procedure exactly, making sure you have known working cables, and if it still doesn't work, the router is toast would be my analysis! Remember, a key point here is to make sure the factory reset was performed to return it to the defaults.
